In most recent times, just look at Robson and Tomic. Both were criticized for being given many WCs, but now they are world class players.

Re: Ashleigh Barty

I don't know, she received 3 MD WC's last year and didn't advance past 1R in any of them, plus she's never beaten a top 100 player in her life.

At a certain point, enough becomes enough IMO. She's had her chances, time for her to earn it like a big girl.

She drew Kvitova & Vinci it's not like they were players she was expected to beat

Re: Ashleigh Barty

But she's not a big girl yet it would be silly not to give it to your top junior player who is still developing.

Exactly. if she doesn't get one it will go to journey women with lower rankings than her? How is that fair?

They have their faults, but you cannot deny they are world class players.

Also the game is developing. Tour level is far harder than challenger lever ever was. This is why it was easier a decade ago for youngsters to break into top 100. Now players ranked 50-100 are so much stronger that they can hold off and defeat youngsters that are trying to come up.

So getting WCs to give better experience to youngsters for the top level has big advantages over players who always play qualifying (which is filled with challenger level players) and never experience to what is required.

There are many recent examples of very good junior players who tried to transition by only playing challenger level events and get there with their ranking, but now they just got stuck there, they just cannot make the step up anymore.

If you look at Ash Barty career:

Very good junior at Aussie tournaments
Lost in Junior Australian Open (i think WC)
Dominated juniors internationally
Ok-ish ITF results so far
Lost in Australian Open
Dominated Aussie 25ks / Still poor in doubles
Lost in French Open
Dominated Nottingham $50k / Just won first double title
Lost in Wimbledon
Cont. Dom. Aussie 25ks / Dominated doubles

She has developed so much because of her WC chances. Now she knows how to play at Aussie Open, so she has a good chance to win a round this time.

She also played Toyota and lost to Voegele in the QFs after only losing 2 (?) games. And also won doubles.

1 game in 2 matches.

But its Ash's problem at the moment that she plays great matches and then poor matches. And that always depend on the amount of pressure put on by the opponent. (ie. Ash usually plays bad when her opponent plays good)

She has a very free flowing and adventurous game, but at this stage she can't play freely when she is under pressure. Her variations disappear, she starts pulling away on the backhand (so the ball hits the net) and she starts over hitting the forehand (and the ball goes long).

As she gets more experienced, she will find a way of enjoying herself on court even when her opponents play out of their skin. She will rise to the occasion and respond to great shots with even better shots. But to achieve this you need to develop a very high skill and confidence level first, and to achieve that you need to win a lot and trust your abilities.

That is exactly what Jason Stoltenberg always talks about Ash's future (it is really the only thing he talks about ), she will develop an enjoyment for the game she hasn't experienced yet and she will have fun on court.

But not yet. She will most likely get even more frustrated on court as the expectations rise, both from tennis followers and herself. You could see it against Bojana, Ash really expected herself to win the tournament and she was so mad that she was losing to Boj.

I said it before in this thread earlier this year, that we can expect a lot more emotion from Ash in the recent future.

But Holland was never a future top player. She doesn't have single good result above $25 K and didn't have a good junior career either.

Re: Ashleigh Barty

Confirmed to replace Dellacqua for Hopman Cup!

She'll play Ivanovic, Schiavone, and Petkovic!

Looking foward to it. She won't be under pressure somit should be good to watch.

Re: Ashleigh Barty

Great experience, can't see her winning any. But it'd be awesome if she can sneak a set here and there.
