Re: Aussies in WTA events

Well that was a tad disappointing... Rodionova lost her QF to Sevastova going down 6-7 2-6 but Groth had a real shocker, choking away a 7-6 5-2 lead to lose to Parra Santonja 7-6 5-7 5-7

Stubbs is still in the Doubles in the Italian Open though, into the Semis.

And so on to Madrid qualifying where Molik plays 13th seed Kudryavtseva and Rodionova 10th seed Zahlavova Strycova. Good luck!

Re: Aussies in WTA events

Disapointing Jarka didn't close it out....some tough draws in Madrid qualies...depends if our two girls rock up with the brains working or not...if they do both could win....if not they could get spanked!!

Re: Aussies in WTA events

Pity that Jarka choked and lost that one. She needs to haul arse and grab some points as she has a bundle coming off at the FO. Hopefully she can gain enuf points for DE to Wimby and get herself together in time to stay within top 100 for USO.

Re: Aussies in WTA events

Well, the Aussies continue to have a good year on the WTA tour - probably the best year in a very long time.

Stosur's been kicking arse, with a tourney win and plenty of QFs. Nastya's just reached her 3rd quarter final for the year. Molik's had a number of good wins. Groth reached a QF. Monique and Sophie have both had tour wins too.

This week, Nastya has made her way to the QFs in Strasbourg and plays Vania King for a spot in the semis. Good luck!

Re: Aussies in WTA events

Sophie Ferguson is in qualifying at Birmingham. She plays a British WC in round 1 but is due to play Kaia Kanepi in order to qualify. Good luck.

Re: Aussies in WTA events

Sophie's winning her Q1 match easily atm.

But the main draw is out too:
Groth v. Julie Coin
Rodionova v. qualifer (winner plays Rezai!)
Molik v. Wozniak (9)

Re: Aussies in WTA events

Whats with the points on offer at Birmingham?

Looking at the draw Ferguson and Groth both have good shots at making the third round, but the points on offer:
First Round: 1
Second Round: 15
Third Round: 30
Quarter Final: 70
etc...

That seems incredibly low considering winning a first round in GS Qualies is 40 points. Most WTA first round wins i believe give you around 40 points, not 15.

Stosur | Dellacqua | Gajdosova | Tomljanovic | Gavrilova | Rodionova | Barty

Re: Aussies in WTA events

Yeah, it's a bit because it's one of the low level tournaments which normally only has a 32-player draw. But because it's a 56-player draw, they basically have to spread the same number of points across an extra round. So a normal tournament this size (32 draw) goes 1-30-70-etc. in the points scale, but this one with 56-draw just breaks it down another level: 1-15-30-70-etc.

It's a bit weird yeah, but on the plus side, if it wasn't a 56-draw we wouldn't have 4 Aussies in the MD. (2 of which had solid wins overnight! Go Jarka and A-Rod!!)

Re: Aussies in WTA events

Alicia plays top seed Wozniak for the second time in a week in Eastbourne quallies

Jarka plays W/C Naomi Broady and has Chakvedatze and Sprem among others in a tough quarter.

Nastya plays her old partner Poutchek in Rosmalen and should qualify.

Sally plays Anne Kremer and will have to get past Zahlavova.
