Jarka's citizenship

Hurry UP Immigration officials!!!!!!!!!

The 22-year-old, who moved to Australia seven years ago, is waiting on immigration officials to decide if they will grant her a passport.

But she is worried changes to immigration laws may affect her chances of gaining citizenship because she spends much of the year competing outside Australia.

Groth said she was frustrated waiting for immigration officials to decide whether she could become an Australian citizen.

"I was living there since I was 15, I have had residency since I was 18. I even got married," Groth said. "God, what else do they want me to prove that I want to be Australian?"

Re: Jarka's citizenship

Surely an Athlete who spends most of her time away for the country for the reason of her sport should get some sort of special excuse to get citizenship easier. These rules are so stupid, I said it before, we need to get the media on to this somehow, by way of sunrise or something...so frustrating for Jarka.

Good news for Jarka in her attempts to finally represent Australia full time and to become a citizen. A proposed new law in Australia could see changes to immigration laws allowing travelling athletes who are Australian residents to gain citizenship. You can find a media release from Australian Senator Chris Evans, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, here:

Re: Jarka's citizenship

I could see TA making some kind of citizenship presentation to Jarka and Nice-tya on Australia Day during the AO (if the red tape gets taken care of between now and then).

Still a bit complicated for elite sportspeople. They still have to have spent 6 months physically in Australia in the last 2 years and three months in the last year. With travel committments that might be a bit hard for Jarka and Nastya. Hopefully theyve cocked up the days and theres no delay in this.

There's more to life than just being happy.

Re: Jarka's citizenship

Three months shouldn't be too hard. December/January is a no-brainer and only need a few extra weeks (eg Nastya being back home atm) to clock up the other month.

Tennis player Jarmila Groth will become a fair dinkum Aussie tomorrow.
THe slovakian-born wife of fellow tennis pro Sam Groth, Jarka, as she's affectionately known, will finally become and Australian citizen at a ceremony in Canberra.
