Re: The ''Discovery'' Thread

^^
Yes, I know what you mean

Yesterday the Rod Laver QLD Junior Championships finished.
I think that TQ had a record number of entrants (over 650) which means it's looking pretty good at the grassroots level.

2 players, Ashleigh Barty and Lyann Hoang, won titles.
Barty, 12, was the top seed for the 12&U singles event and No.2 for the doubles. She dropped only 19 games in 10 matches to win the singles and doubles titles. Hardly surprising. One to watch out for.

Even more impressive was the form of Hoang, 12. As the No.2 seed in the 14&U event, Hoang made it through to the semi finals without dropping a game. She then beat the third seed 6-1 6-2 and the top seed 7-6(4) 6-4 to win the title. Another to look out for.

Teiwa Casey and her partner Katy O'Shea are in the semi finals of the Darwin ITF Junior doubles event also, good luck and well done to them.

And azza and co, if you don't like this thread or the material it contains, then don't post in it

Re: The ''Discovery'' Thread - Vodafone Arena Renamed Hisense Arena

Decided to make this a bit of a TA news thread as well as just a Discovery Thread

Just saw on the TA Website that Vodafone Arena has been renamed, 'Hisense Arena'

What do you guys think of the new name?
Apparently TA will be offering night session tickets for matches on Hisense Arena at the 2009 Australian open

Re: The Discovery Thread - Remember the Names - Rajicic, Polak, Casey, Stojic, Hoang

Bump!
Viktorija Rajicic, Molly Polak and Abby Myers are the members of this year's Optus Australian World Junior Tennis Competition team.

Unfortunately, the Aussies were put in one of the toughest groups with 4th seed, Great Britain, 6th seed Bolivia. Tunisia rounds out the group.

On Day 1, Australia played Great Britain. Molly lost her singles to Jessica Ren 4-6 6-4 6-2. This is a great effort as the Brits rate Ren rather highly. Rajicic then got flogged 6-1 6-0 by Laura Robson (WTF is Laura doing playing 14&U again ) and then they lost the doubles in 2.
Australia lt. Great Britain 0-3.

On Day 2, the Aussies played Bolivia. Molly won her singles 6-2 6-2 () but Viktorija suffered a 6-3 6-4 defeat. The girls then combined to win the doubles 4-6 6-3 6-4. Good win over a seeded team

Tonight the girls take on Tunisia. If they win 3-0, they should make it through to the 5th - 8th Playoff ties. Good luck

The Brits are doing well in both the Juniors and in the women. O'Brien, Keothavong, Baltacha, Hawkins etc are all moving along well and I am very impressed with ths Laura Robson girl. They will have Konta soon as well. Lets hope some of these young girls of ours can keep pace with Laura etc.

Re: The Discovery Thread - Remember the Names - Rajicic, Polak, Casey, Stojic, Hoang

Time to bump this.

Since August;
14 y.o. Viktorija RAJICIC has
- Represented Australia in the Maureen Connolly Brinker Cup
- Reached the semi finals of the Optus 16s Nationals (lt. eventual champion, Sumner 6-7 6-1 2-6) on hardcourt
- Gained an ITF Junior Ranking
- Reached the 3rd Rd of the G1 Loy Yang Power Traralgon ITF Junior Champs, beating two top 100 ranked juniors
- Competed in the Australian Open Junior Championships, losing to 13th seeded Buchina 2-6 4-6

14 y.o. Molly POLAK has
- Represented Australia in the Maureen Connolly Brinker Cup
- Gained an ITF Junior Ranking
- Reached the QF in singles at an ITF Junior Event in Asia

14 y.o Nina CATOVIC has
- Won Optus 14s Nationals on hardcourt
- Helped WA win 14s Teams Event

13 y.o. Teiwa CASEY has
- Represented Australia in Maureen Connolly Brinker Cup
- Helped WA win 14s Teams Event
- SF Optus 16s Spring Nationals on hardcourt
- Maintained ITF Junior Ranking

13 y.o Kassandra DUNSER has
- Represented Australia in Maureen Connolly Brinker Cup
- Won the Optus 14s Spring Nationals on clay
- Reached a QF on the AMT Circuit in South Australia

13 y.o Stefani STOJIC has
- Represented Australia in Maureen Connolly Brinker Cup
- RU at Optus 14s Spring Nationals on clay

12 y.o Lyann HOANG has
- SF Optus 14s Nationals on hardcourt

I'd keep an eye out over this group. IMO Rajicic and Hoang are the cream of the crop.

There is a video interview from the 14s Nationals with Nina Catovic and a link to some footage of the Aussies in action at the Maureen Connolly Brinker Cup from the TA Site

Viktorija Rajicic looks like Marina Erakovic

Re: The Discovery Thread - Unearthing Generation Next

Vika Rajicic won her first ITF Junior Girls Singles Title a couple of weeks ago at the G4 Auckland ITF Junior Championships. Seeded 15th, Vika beat Molly Polak in the quarter finals and two Japanese girls back to back in the semi finals and final to win the title. Impressively, she didn't even drop a set! At age 14 yrs and 10 mths, she is the youngest Aussie girl to win an ITF Junior Title since Isabella Holland won in Gosford in 2006.

She also won the doubles title with Polak

Last week in Wellington at another G4 event, Rajicic lost in R2 to one of the Japanese girls she had beaten the previous week. However she and Polak won another doubles title and with that Rajicic should jump up the ITF ladder to around 450. Polak will rise to approximately 560.

The best performer in singles in Wellington was 13 y.o. Territorian Kassandra Dunser. She made the quarter finals and seems to be developing nicely as she has shot to No.1 in her age group in Australia.

Well done girls

Just informing you that we were not talking about either the youngest Aussie girl to ever win a Junior ITF nor Tyra Calderwood

Rajicic up to 478 and Polak 585 on the latest rankings.
I think Rajicic can end the year ranked in the top 100, and Polak maybe 100-200

Re: The Discovery Thread - Unearthing Generation Next

Viktorija Rajicic was awarded a qualifying wildcard to compete in this week's $US10 000 North Shore City ITF Women's Circuit Event in New Zealand. Unfortunately she lost in the opening round 7-5 6-1 to the Chinese 9th seed Jie Hao. Hao has been ranked as high as 329 in 2007, and is currently ranked 755. Not a bad effort for a 14 y.o. girl

TNZ has again given Rajicic a wildcard into qualifying for the upcoming $US10 000 Hamilton ITF Women's Circuit Event. Hopefully she gets a better draw
