Re: The Discovery Thread

Sara really needed to step it up to avoid being left behind by the likes of Hon and Cabrera and it looks like she is doing just that. Good efforts from Wagland, Birrell, Ruhrig and Perez as well.

Samantha Stosur, Daniela Hantuchova, Lucie Safarova

Kim Birrell, Sabine Lisicki, Abbie Myers, Priscilla Hon

Kristina Mladenovic, Heather Watson, Ana Konjuh, Zoe Hives

Tomic d. Lekaj 6-0 6-4

Sara's on fire. Into the quarters where she'll play Korashvili/Danilina.

Re: The Discovery Thread

Isabelle Wallace is playing for GBR now, her parents were there so I guess the separation was too hard. No big loss for us, she's average.

Re: The Discovery Thread

Oh interesting, I was wondering why she was MIA for the december showdown. Probably our 3rd best 96' girl after Barty and Hives but I agree, no big loss.

Kim Birrell, Sabine Lisicki, Abbie Myers, Priscilla Hon

Re: The Discovery Thread

Thailand G1

SF
(5)Katherine Ip (HKG) d. (16)Sara Tomic (AUS) 64 62
Ellen Perez (AUS) d. (2)Elizaveta Kulichkova (RUS) 63 62

Final
Ellen Perez (AUS) d. (5)Katherine Ip (HKG) 76(5) 67(6) 62

Awesome result for Ellen. The win over Kulichkova is especially impressive. The G1 win puts her close to the top 50 and gives her the option to play out her junior career at the grand slams, which is obviously great experience heading into a pro career.

Also a good week for Sara who continues to improve, this result will see her into the top 100 for the first time.

Re: The Discovery Thread

Been following Ellen's results for a while and she seems to have been gradually improving for quite some time but this is a big leap forward in form. Even though she is older, this is very encouraging. Nice to see a NSW girl doing well, we haven't had many decent juniors for quite a while.

Samantha Stosur, Daniela Hantuchova, Lucie Safarova

Kim Birrell, Sabine Lisicki, Abbie Myers, Priscilla Hon

Kristina Mladenovic, Heather Watson, Ana Konjuh, Zoe Hives

Re: The Discovery Thread

Very true. The only NSW girl I can remember recently doing alright was Abbie. We've definitely been left behind by QLD, VIC and to an extent WA, when realistically we should be producing as many talents as they are. Hopefully we can get a few more up there, the really young NSW girls look promising with Mendez and Ivanov at the top of their respective age groups.

Re: The Discovery Thread

There's plenty of players taking up the sport at a young age. But a lot give up along the way. Those sticking with it simply cannot make ends meet financially. Whilst there are the court facilities to take up the game and begin playing junior comps and then AMTs etc, there is no long term support and progressive development programs for different tiers. Also no sponsorships or College system like in US, Europe, parts of Asia (Japan, Korea). The National Academies are a joke, changing the system every year without outcomes, no visible performance benchmarks, and full of petty politics and favouritism. The AIS is no better. These are not world class academies. The only supporters of TA are those who work in it and believe their own bs, or the few players that benefit. There are also not enough junior ITFs and Pro Tours in frequecy and accessible locations like overseas to help players get experience transtioning to the next level. TA has no long term vision or ability to harness the raw material at hand, and there is no private sector funding to fill the gap either. Unfortunately its unlikely anything will change for some time to come.

Re: The Discovery Thread

Does anyone know if there are Aussie girls playing in NCAA who are having good results? I've found Monique Krutak (9 wins and 1 loss this season) but not much more

Re: The Discovery Thread

Is this aka US Div1/2/3 College tennis system. http://www.ncaa.com/sports/tennis-women/d1 http://www.collegetennisonline.com/ http://www.usta.com/Play-Tennis/College-Tennis/
Probably a useful option for good players coming out of high school at satellite circuit level or close to, who want a tertiary education and can get a funding scholarship.
Bengson and Boj for eg have taken this route, thou now seen as "journeywomen" as they are a bit older than the TA magical 17-22 mark and expectations they would already be in top 50-100 peaking early (like Kvitova, Azarenka, Pavulchenkova, Sharapova etc). But over past 2 decades the model has changed to players peaking in mid to late 20s (female and male). Some coming from US College system going onto bigger things - Craybas, Blake, Anderson, Harrison, Isner.
