Re: Marija Mirkovic

Unfortunately, Marija ended up losing the QF match 4-6 7-5 6-4.

Still, it was a productive week and signs of good things to come

Yes, but unfortunately, Marija led 6-4 5-7 3-1 when play was suspended. Obviously Jovanovic was too good when they came back the next day.

Today, Marija re-entered the top 550 on the WTA Rankings, she is currently sitting at World No.549, No.14 in Australia, and No.3 in Victoria.

She has entered in both the 25k in Traralgon and the 25k in Mount Gambier and has lots of wildcards still up her sleeve, so should she do well over the next few weeks, hopefully she can crack the top 500 for the first time

Re: Marija Mirkovic

Its great that Marija enters tournaments across the Balkan's etc... to get some clay court toughness. Probably has some famly connectios across there. Either way she's probably going to be always a bit more battle hardened than the others. Hopefully she can harness that consistency and concentration.

Re: Marija Mirkovic

$US25 000 Mount Gambier ITF Women's Circuit Event - Mount Gambier, AUS
Women's Singles, Main Draw of 32
Representing Australia, Marija Mirkovic, unseeded

R1: defeated Miki MIYAMURA (JPN) 6-2 6-4
R2: versus Natalie GRANDIN (RSA) (7) OR Emelyn STARR (AUS)

Interesting draw for Marija. I think she can win her opener, and if she does, she will most likely face Natalie Grandin in the second round. At the 2007 Australian Open, Marija beat Grandin 6-1 7-5 to advance through to the second round of qualifying. That made Marija the No.1 ranked Aussie junior and put her close to a top 500 ranking. However, if she can set up a rematch with Grandin, she will better her career high of 517 and sit between 501 and 504. If she can make the quarter finals, she will crack the top 400 and jump to between 484 and 488
GOOD LUCK THIS WEEK

Re: Marija Mirkovic

Hopefully she can face Nat again. She hit her off the court at the critical times in that AO match. She had no trouble with the spins of the Sth African - so two years on, hopefully she can do it again.

$US25 000 Port Pirie ITF Women's Circuit Event - Port Pirie, AUS
Women's Singles, Main Draw of 32
Representing Australia, Marija Mirkovic, unseeded

R1: versus Lizaan DU PLESSIS (RSA) (Q)

Winnable. Hopefully she can make up for last week's double bagel by winning her opener here. If she loses in the opening round, her ranking will still rise to somewhere between 509 and 511. If she makes the second round, she will debut in the top 500 ranked around 489 to 493. And if she can make the quarter finals (by beating Emily Webley Smith or Shiho Hisamatsu) she will jump to somewhere between 467 and 472

Re: Marija Mirkovic

^^^
Disappointing loss against Du Plessis there

This week, Marija got directly into the main draw in Perth. In the opening round she plays Alenka Hubacek, a wildcard entrant. There is no previous H2H history between these two, but I expect Marija to score a good win. If she were to do so, it would definitely boost her chances of being awarded an AO Qualifying wildcard.

On top of that, if she wins Mirkovic will move into the top 500 for the first time in her career.

So plenty of motivation for a win which should come

Re: Marija Mirkovic

And Marija crushed Hubacek, 6-1 6-0.
This will see Marija crack the top 500 for the first time in her career

In addition, is a great boost to her AO Qualifying wildcard aspirations.
Will probably play Marinne Giraud, the fourth seed, in the second round.

Re: Marija Mirkovic

I watched Marija and she has got a good agressive game. She started off well and there were some great rallys. But she started too make a few too many errors. Definatly one to keep an eye on.

Re: Marija Mirkovic

Yes, just to wrap up Marija's lead in to the Australian Open

BRISBANE QR1: lt. Rossana DE LOS RIOS (PAR) (8/#95) 2-6 2-6
HOBART QR1: lt. Edina GALLOVITS (ROU) (7/#75) 2-6 1-6

Hopefully she gets a more friendly draw in qualifying for AO

Re: Marija Mirkovic

Marija won her QR1 in Melbourne 4-6 6-4 6-4 over Margalita Chakhnashvili. The only Aussie girl to win her R1.
Now today, Marija has won her R2 6-3 6-4 over Olaru, putting her in the final round of quallies against Kimiko Date Krumm!

What a week from her, she's on the verge of the Top 300 now.
