Well I don't give a shit how she plays, if she wins that is good enough for me. But I have seen her play a few times this year and I know that she can play better than that. She is usually trying to dictate play with her forehand and can direct her serve nicely with good variety.

Its got nothing to do with confidence. Jess plays an attacking game when she gets short balls. With players ranked outside the top 200, you can get short balls more easily, just takes patience, you rally for a while until you get one, but its a different story in the top 200, short balls are harder to come by with just standard rallying. She has to learn to attack far more to get the short ball so that she can start dictating the point. This is her big problem, she doesn't attack return of serve at all, or hit out enough on her groundies and take a few risks to gain control of the point.
