As a result of this I think you'll find Stubbsy (and consequently Molik) straight back into the team. If they're still out in April then Woodforde is to blame.

I am still shitty at us losing to Thailand.

This means woody goes anyway. Its up to the new captain to appoint a coach (if they wish), so unless he gets captain (which could happen) hes out too.

I think TA are impressed with Woodfordes work with the team - judging by their decision to stand with him and Evonne during the Stubbsy dispute.. ....and Nicole Pratts subsequent backing of TA and not Alicia/Rennae after the tie.

Would Nic be avaliable, she's got two little ones now and with Mark still playing Aus basketball she may not have the time.

Give it to Liz Smylie. Won't take crap and highly regarded internationally.

The Melbourne Sunday Herald Sun (7 Nov 04) has the rumour that John Newcombe could be the next Fed Cup Captain, with Tony Roche the Coach and with Mark Woodforde staying 'involved'.

Stubbsy is quoted as saying that a non-confrontational person would suit the role. "We need someone who doesn't want to change the world, but who is going to be supportive and who can work with women of all different types."

Bravo, Stubbsy!

Newk seeks Fed Cup role
Leo Schlink
08nov04

THE battle to fill Australia's Fed Cup captaincy vacancy has drawn a high class field of 12 contenders, headed by Nicole Bradtke and former world No. 1 John Newcombe...

...Tony Roche is not part of the puzzle but increasingly is being linked to world No. 1 Roger Federer...

Politics rife in Fed Cup
Leo Schlink
22nov04

PLAYER politics dominate the contest for the vacated Australian Fed Cup leadership.

Incumbent coach Mark Woodforde hopes to continue in the role under former Davis Cup leader and world No. 1 John Newcombe, but there is reputedly a wave of resistance to Woodforde's involvement...

Di Balestrat, John Alexander, Geoff Masters and Chris Kachel have been linked to the captaincy, but Bradtke remains a short-priced favourite, along with Newcombe.

Interested to know why so many are lining up for the job.. (esp when we are playing Asian zonal quallies next year) and why it's so many high profile people - probably because of Molik's rise in the ranks.

Interesting to see perrenial Aus women's tennis bagger John Alexander in the mix.

Still not sure whether Nicole Bradtke is right one, but the aura of having John Newcombe on court alongside would be great for the girls. But I'd expect Newc wouldn't committ beyond what is needed and that isn't what Oz womens tennis needs.
