Monday @ IW

I had to work a little this morning in the "real world", so I got to IW around noon. Checked in at Stadium 2 for Meghann Shaughnessy and Very Zvonareva. After my disappointment from her match on Saturday, I expected Vera to be blown away by Megs. I admit it, I was wrong. Well, not totally. She was a completely different player than the one who was in that crapfest with Kuznetsova on Saturday. This must be the girl folks are talking about. Vera should let her come out and play more often Great groundies....moved to the net well. I only saw part of the first set, but she was spunky. Good win for her....looking forward to seeing her play Jennifer on Wednesday.

Next up was Marat on Stadium court. He promptly dropped the first set to Koubek and was in quite a spot for a while there. He had the baggiest big white shirt that I have even seen a guy where on. Don't hide it, Marat...tight shirts, no, how about no shirts?? Wouldn't that be more comfortable??

Marat went postal a few times in the third set, but no, he did not break any rackets. He did get a code violation warning for swearing though. He hit a ball so high up in the air after an unforced error by him that I was looking for the "Hang Time" clock in the upper corner of the picture. I think that sucker went into the flight path of incoming aircraft. Seriously, like ten seconds of hang time, lol. No code violation warning though. Ball abuse is a VERY serious matter. It's all fun and games til a ball gets abused. We have measures in place to protect them

Next up was a ceremony for Michael Chang's last tournament here......>>fast forward. How nice. Bye Mikey.

Jennifer and Elena took the court to a sizzling 90+ degrees. It was nasty hot down there. It's a good 15-20 degrees hotter than the air temperature. Elena came out firing. She was hitting these groundies and coming in behind them, but she didn't even need to because they were clear winners. Off both wings. I was like, "Elena, where did the aliens take you since 2001 and when did they bring you back?? Also, is outer space really a big beach in the sky or was Jodie Foster on some serious weed?". Sorry, back to our regularly scheduled tennis.

I know by the time you guys saw the match in the third set on ESPN Dementieva's groundies were crap, but she was hitting so well in the first and second sets. They took a ten-minute heat break before the third and Elena came out totally flat. Jen went up 4-0 easily. Both players blew a gasket over perceived bad calls. There has been a rash of bad baseline calls this tournament, food for thought. Anyways, I'm 99% sure Elena called a linesperson a "whore" after a call she heavily debated as being out. Just my ears maybe, because the linesperson didn't report anything.

Elena managed one game and then Cap got up to serve it out at 5-1. She started out with a 109 mph ace. Next was a 108 mph ace. Good start. She then hit a 111 mph ball that was returned and Elena won the point. Next serve was like 86 mph and Jen lost the point after a great forehand from Elena. The last serve was in the 90s or so, no double faults in the game! Jen looked a bit relieved to put that one away. I don't think she was ready for Dementieva to threaten her today, I certainly was surprised.

Jen went out on the grassy area after the match with Chanda on Steroids, her trainer. They jogged around, jogged sideways, jogged backwards, swatted away kids asking for autographs on their HUGE tennis balls (no lie, while the girl is jogging.....chasing after her like the Pied Piper, lol). To Jen's credit, when she was done with her workout, she signed every little kid's autograph and posed for many pictures with fans

Seen hanging around were Pam Shriver and Bond, Old James Bond. Pam was scratching around for tidbits for the telecast from Lindsay's coach, Rick Leach, as well as others. Lindsay warmed up with her fiance, Jon Leach, with big bro Rick looking on.

Getting some pasta and tacos al carbon in the dining area were Kim Clijsters, Conchita Martinez, tons of guy players I have no idea who they are and about a million coaches who speak Spanish and assorted girlfriends. Jan-Mike came walking by with his Playmate, er....girlfriend. Hmmm, come to think of it he DID need a shave (think about it for a minute). Rios was almost cheerful, the idiot. What's wrong with him?? Tarango was nearby and no one was slapped. David Nalbandian was sitting pondering how the heck he made it to the Wimbledon final while his wife/girlfriend tended to their fussy baby. Another baby was seemingly drawn to the Safina women. Mama Safina was first to soothe the bubby and then Dinara took a turn. Dunno whose kiddo it was, but he seemed to have a thing for large Russian women.

Todd Martin came by in dress slacks while eating a banana. I don't know why that struck me as funny, but it did. It was hot, folks, HOT I tell ya!

Kleinova turned up MULTIPLE times again today....she is definitely the most likely to show up player this week for me. Also, Guga was still at his whoring ways on the practice courts. Dude, go to a movie, check out the pool, visit the Cabezon Outlet Mall. You don't have to practice ALL THE TIME. No wonder he's so skinny! Also saw JC Ferrero being escorted back from winning his first round match. Again, with a shirt on! What is WRONG with you guys! We give you a little Anna, the least you could do is take the dang shirts off! And take those Shaq shorts in for refitting. Oops......I'm delirious from sun stroke.

Okay kiddies, I'm tired, I'm going to sleep, ESPN showed you the night matches. What more do you WANT from me, huh???

Talk to ya tomorrow!

thats how Vera plays
changes her play against various opponents

match vs Sveta reminds me when she played Edina Gallovits in the 2000 Orange Bowl final, Edina was saying after, she only moonballs against me, guess it works (4-0 in meets)

thanx Traci for the reports again

Good luck to my favs

Great stuff - again.

What, Nalbandian has a baby? He's like 12 years old. Maybe Elena was trying to impress Jen, who is somewhat of an authority in this regard, with her vocabulary.

P.S. Tell Kleinova to stop stalking you!
