The ITF database shows no record, but I know Tammy has beaten Shinobu at least once in straight sets (the Gifu, Japan finals in May 2000). Anyone else know of Asagoe-Tanasugarn clashes?

Ok Rose. I will try, but my predictions are not all that accurate IMO This is long to please don't fall asleep
-------------------------------------------------------

Tammy (Queen) Tanasugarn vs. Shinobu Asagoe

Never played eachother

First i must say, what a shame that tammy must face Shinobu at the moment... Shinobu has just found her form of 2000 again and is beating higher ranked oppoennts again, including top players like Schett and Dementieva. Essentially neither Tammy or Shinobu cannot overpower eachother.... they have similar abilities, perhaps Shinobu still goes for more on her shots..... but Tammy has never been one to tone down her impatience on shot selection either
I will take into account that Asagoe has just beaten a powerfull heavy hitter like Iroda in 2 sets.... this is a good win no matter what type of form Iroda is in. Tammy on the other hand has not played good tennis since her win in India....
The thing with Shinobu is, she's very very streaky....she can play 3 games in a row where she will pound winners and charge the net - literally looking like a top 10 player... then she very quickly falls appart and sprays the ball all over the court. Also Tammy must watch out for the Asagoe backhand.... powerfull and she manages to hit the line with it time after time. I remember her backhand standing up to Venus Williams groundies in Wimby one year.
Tammy seems to have re-vamped her serve, and no matter how vulnerable it seems, players seem to hate it.... why? because its different.... its not easy to 'time' a ball that is riddled with side spin!
Also Tammy seems to power her serve down the line as well.... the way she handled Lindsay in Japan clearly tells me her serve was paying off.... there is NO way you can get a close score with Lindsay if you are not getting 1st serves in....so credit to Tamarine. Shinobu does not become carefull in her game.... she is either making winners, or she's not. If she is inconsistent this ciould a blowout and an easy win for Tammy, but as i said before....Shinobu's previous matches are not indicating this is going to an easy match. Another similarity between these girls is their 'fight' on court..... Shinobu runs EVERYTHING down.... so If Tammy gets a little 'slow' in the 2nd set (which she often does) Shinobu will definently bounce back on her.

Anways... Both Tammy and Shinobu will charge the net when needed.... but whoever is dominating from the baseline should win this encounter. I pick Tammy in 3 because of her variety.... Tammy has learnt slice, high ball, power shots and dropshots - all of these she used against Serena.... Asagoe pounds away but can also charge the net and has great court coverage. By no means is this a comfortable match for Tammy, I think she will win.... but In the form that Shinobu is in...it should not be shock horror if Tammy was to lose this match. If Tammy mixes it uop and uses plenty of high-balls and follows them up with an aggressive shot...it should be a good tactic to thow Asagoe's game off.... its just too dangerous for Tammy to try and out slug Shinobu at the baseline, its too risky because of the form that Shinobu is in at the moment. I think Tammy is smart enough to know what she has to do... just try her hardest and not let her opponent find rythym.
Tammy should grind this through in 3.

Tamarine Tanasugarn def. Shinobu Asagoe 7-6 2-6 6-2

Hi Benny, Khun Jiro, Khun Rose ... etc ...

Tammy vs Asagoe

I saw Asagoe played Kveta here in Aussie Open 2002. (1st round I think) She played quite good but she didn't concerntrate on each point. She sorts of blowing everything away if she is not happy with the call. Well, it's year 2003 now and she might have changed.

Uhm...... I think Tammy can manage this Japanese girl quite well. I'm not sure why I'm thinking this way but I believe Tammy has a better chance to win.

Go Tammy! Please come back to Top 20 spot again.

Arrow Tammy VS Asagoe

VS

Head TO Head Record : Tammy leads 2 : 0

There is no record of both players in WTA, the above record is from ITF's head to head data.

$50K ITF 2000 Challenger, Gifu, Japan Final Tammy : 7-5,6-4
$25K ITF 2000 Challenger Surbiton, Great Britain SF Tammy 6-1,6-4
14th Asian Games 2002, Busan, Korea SF Tammy : 6-3,6-2

It become very interesting since this is the first meeting of both players in WTA. Shinobu's been playing great tennis lately, she beated Elena Dementieva in Acapulco, Mexico before lost to Diaz-Oliva in SF. And yesterday she just defeated Iroda 7-6(4),6-2. Tammy won her first title in Indian Open 2003 last month. I think it's going to be a tough match for Tammy since Shinobu is a consistent player.

The better girl will win, hope they give us a great match tomorrow.

V.Melb
Thanks for your analysis report. Hope the record will be 3:0.

*HOW* can they put Shinobu & Tammy on *TOMORROW*?! I don't understand why they start the 2nd round matches when all the 1st round matches aren't even completed yet. And at 10:00 a.m.??????

This means I will have to leave the house at 5:00 a.m. or so to get to Indian Wells by 8:00 to meet Tammy before she leaves the hotel for her 8:30 warm up. THANKS A LOT (not) to the organisers who will force me to drive home instead of being able to stay straight through the weekend! (And with gas prices moving upwards of $2/gallon [I know, whine, whine, whine...US prices are *still* cheaper than much of the world], I will be spending about US$25 to get there and back, unless I decide to call in sick...)

Anyway, I would not miss Tammy's match for the world (unless my alarm clock blows it for me!).

Done griping. I know many of you aren't able to attend matches at all, so I'd best shut up and get some sleep

Hi Rose,
How far is it ? from your home to IW. If I'm not wrong your car got broken when you came back home last year. You should better check your car condition for making sure before you leave home. Don't forget to take lot of Tammy's pic for us. I think Tammy really need your support, please don't miss her match.

Tammy's match start at 10:00 a.m. That means may be 01:00 a.m. Thailand time. I will be supporting her only on computor monitor and I will have many cups of coffee tonight.

Don't forget to set your alarm clock as well.
