Re: Annika Beck

well, pretty weak results from Annika since Melbourne, not much is working, serve is also too weak on this level, should go back to ITFs soon to get some wins for her confidence.
But sure, hard to say more, we didn´t see the match, saw a 4 min clip of Beck vs Bertens earlier on youtube and there I also wasn´t impressed at all with Annika´s play...we will see how it goes on clay

Re: Annika Beck

I hate to be the "I told you so" guy but I saw this coming. People were going overboard with their predictions during the winter, some claiming she'll make the Top 30 etc.... I always thought this would happen, Annika's game is a bit "limited", she relies a lot on working harder and running down balls and this type of game has limitations quickly.

I personally think she's lower Top 100 material (80-100) and will probably stay there, I just don't see much more in her game, sorry.

Wow, really awesome thing to say at this point. Congratulations.

There were maybe 2-3 posters tops who predicted Top 30 for her. Also, how is this "going overboard"? She already reached 65 with 18 years. She beat Hsieh and Shvedova and almost Peng, too. It's hardly "going overboard" to say she may reach Top 30 sometimes.
Show me one country with an 18 year old player ranked 65 going less "overboard" than Germany.

"Going overboard" for me (if anything) is predicting that Lottner, Witthöft, Friedsam and the likes will all be better than Beck when neither has beaten anybody and all still struggle around on 10k ITFs. Not saying they aren't very talented and might be good someday, but hard to tell if they will ever improve enough to actually do it. Annika at least has shown some WTA level quality at the age of 18 already and nobody can question her work ethic. History is full of "former interesting talents", but not so full of talents who were ranked 60 something with 18 years and had absolutely great work ethic and then flamed out.

All you achieved with this post is making my "told you so" list the day she reaches Top 30.

Re: Annika Beck

Sorry but I disagree. With Lottner & Witthöft the question just is will they be able to maximize their potential. They may not, but there is a lot of potential there.

Annika on the other hand delivers results, the problem is that there's not as much potential to begin with than the other two. Her game just has some fundamental weaknesses, one being her serve that is at times very weak. The other thing is that she defends a lot and players that are mainly on the defense are bound to be figured out by their competitors sooner or later.

You got me wrong though, my post wasn't meant to criticize her at all, after all she's performing just like I expected and being in the Top 100 is nothing to shake a stick at. I was more critical of the expectations people put onto these girls who often go overboard, making results look worse than they actually are just because you expect too much.

Somebody who expects her to make the Top 30 might be disappointed by this, I'm not because I never had such high hopes to begin with.

Re: Annika Beck

Well, you can't tell where she's gonna peak, she's still so young... lotsa time to work on these weaknesses. The only question is more whether she will put on the amount of work required to change her game.

First of all, I don't have an issue with disagreeing with you at all.

Yes, my point of view is that a (maybe) only semi-talented player who is 18 (now 19), who has already proven to be able to reach the Top 70 and has a very good work ethic on top of that is usually likely to have a better career than a hard hitting youth who hasn't won anything at all yet.
Again, how many of the latter appear every year? How many reach their "potential"?

I'm fine if you disagree with that, though.

What I don't like is writing off a young girl of 18 (19) who has at the very least proven to have some potential and many more years left to improve. And with her work ethic that is more than a remote possibility. You complain about 2-3 people believing she might crack Top 30. On the other hand how many times have I read in this thread alone that she has no more than 80-100 potential while she is ranked 66th as we speak.
