Kerber levels for Germany after Bencic win

By Stuart Fraser

LEIPZIG, GERMANY: Angelique Kerber marked her homecoming in style as the Australian Open champion beat Timea Bacsinszky in straight sets to level the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Cup first round tie between Germany and Switzerland at 1-1.

Some had feared Kerber might suffer something of a hangover after claiming her first Grand Slam title in Melbourne but, just seven days after beating Serena Williams, the new world No. 2 showed no signs of any physical and mental fatigue as she beat Timea Bacsinszky 61 63 in just 74 minutes.

Kerber will have to bring a similarly high level to the court on Sunday in the first reverse singles rubber against Belinda Bencic, the 18-year-old world No. 11 who further impressed with a 63 64 win against Andrea Petkovic in the opening rubber of the tie.

Kerber said: "I’m happy with my performance, I’m happy with how I’m playing. Timea is a great player. I was just trying to enjoy every moment out here on court.

"I have just positive emotions. The crowd was unbelievable. You’re playing at home, this gives you much more energy."

Much of the focus this week in Leipzig has understandably been on Kerber and she received a loud welcome upon walking out onto the court to face world No. 15 Bacsinszky, who had actually won their only previous meeting in Ortesei more than six years ago but was facing a much tougher prospect this time.

Kerber raced to a 5-0 lead and although Bacsinszky prevented the dreaded bagel set with a hold of serve, the German had no issue in serving out the set in just 31 minutes to the delight of the home fans.

Breaks were exchanged at the start of the second set before Kerber edged ahead with a break for 32 as a deep return forced the backhand error from Bacsinszky. Serving to stay in the match at 35, the Swiss saved three match points with some big hitting but hit an untimely double fault on the fourth.

Germany captain Barbara Rittner said: "She [Kerber] did unbelievably well. To beat Timea 61 63 is awesome. I think everybody could see that she lost a little bit of energy in the second set, but she handled it unbelievable and she can be really proud. We are proud of her."

In an opening rubber between two players who were meeting for the first time, Petkovic came out and dominated in the early stages for a 2-0 lead. But the momentum quickly shifted as the German lost control of her groundstrokes and Bencic won six of the next seven games, the set ending with Petkovic’s 16th unforced error as she dumped a forehand into the net.

In contrast to the first set, the second was closely contested with Bencic only bringing up the first break points of the set in the eighth game, although Petkovic saved both and managed to hold.

Bencic ramped up the pressure again, though, with Petkovic serving at 4-5 and sealed her sixth victory in seven Fed Cup singles rubbers on her second match point as Petkovic again tamely netted a forehand.

Bencic said: "Of course the first match is very important. I’m happy I could make a lead here. I’m just happy how I was very calm in the important moments and I just played what I needed to play.

"I have a lot of confidence. I really feel like I belong in between the best players in the world. It just makes me happy and all my work paid off, so now I really just try to enjoy it on the big stage."

Bencic goes into Sunday’s first reverse singles rubber with a 2-0 head-to-head record over Kerber, something that could prove a psychological factor.

Switzerland captain Heinz Guenthardt said: "This is an extremely tough match for us but if Belinda plays to her maximum abilities, she has a shot against anyone and she’s proved that. She’s beaten pretty much anyone in the Top 5.

"I think it’s going to be a huge challenge for her but at the same time Angie does know she has lost to Belinda and she knows how well Belinda can play. I think the pressure is on Angie."

Jelena: "If I had to pick someone after me, I'd pick Serena."

I am not a fan of the direction a lot of Maria threads have taken over the last 12 months.
The undertone is very disappointing, aggressive and the comments are sometimes rude to a player just trying to earn a living, playing her hardest and having a good amount of success given her god given, natural talents.
You made the list: NEW President Bouchard, Cibulkova, Mladenovic, Wozniacki, Kerber, Cornet, Watson, Broady.
