Re: 1914 results
Week of April 27-May 3
April 27-May 2, Southsea Hard Court Tournament, Hampshire, England (Clay)
Venue: Southsea Hard Courts
FI: Lavinia Radeglia d. Madeline O'Neill 8-10 17-15 2-0 retired
MX: Madeline O'Neill/George Watt d. Beatrice Lee/George Thomas 6-3 6-4
From "Lawn Tennis and Badminton", May 14, 1914: "The first spring tournament held on the Southsea Hard Courts was a great success in every way. The entries were good in class and sufficient in number to allow for a week's play without unduly overworking the competitors, while the weather, except for one afternoon, was almost perfect. [...]
"As far as we can judge a record for length was set up, so far as ladies are concerned, when Miss Lavinia Radeglia beat Mrs Madeline O'Neill by the score of 8-10, 17-15 in the first two sets; Miss Radeglia was leading 2-0 in the third set when Mrs O'Neill retired. This was hardly surprising; it would have astonished no one if one of the ladies had done so earlier in the proceedings. The match took three-and-a-half hours to play (another record, we should think), but apart from its closeness, it was not very exhilirating to watch. Still, as a feat of endurance and steadiness both ladies are to be complimented on their record-smashing performance."
