How Good is Sania?

I'm just wondering as i was looking over some of her past results and they weren't that great. One in particualr stood out:

Karen Paterson (GBR) bt Sania Mirza 6-3, 6-4

This was in an event a couple fo years ago, so obviosuly much has changed. But from looking at her results i get the impression she still has a long way to go.

What are her strenghts/weaknesses and can she be the one to get India back up to teh top of the game?

Sania has definitely matured a lot more. I hope Jay can answer you.

Sania's supposed to be the most talented player to come out of India so far...

Her pro results the last couple of months have been very promising.

Sania is quite good. If she were in the US or Europe, she definitely wouldn't get the kind of respect she is getting, but in India, she has been some sort of a phenom so far. Count me in as one who is extremely hopeful but not ready to say that she will be a top-100 player, or even top-200 just YET. In the juniors, she has not had any top-30 win of note yet, but she has not played a lot in the last 7 months or so in the juniors, and that is when she seemed to show a lot of improvement playing the satellites in Thailand and India and also the Asiad. I will start getting excited about top-100 prspects etc, once I see a few more top level junior wins and also top-300 satellite and challenger wins.

In other words, I am sitting on the fence, ready to fall into the Sania bandwagon anytime. Actually, I was among the first to start the bandwagon when she was unknown a couple of years back, but then I tend to jump off the wagon when it gets too congested suddenly :-)

Her best asset is a totally carefree attitude. She never feels pressure and she just goes out there whacking the ball. Has a lot of power in her shots due to timing and all that but she is not the power player or power server of the western mould. Her serve has improved a lot in the last few months, I hear.

She does need to work a lot on her volleys.

Her great strength is her mental toughness. I watched her match against Luzarova, she was down 6-7(7-9) 7-5 0-3 and then played well to win 4 straight games. But then she didn't seem as fit as Luzarova and the Czech won it 7-5

Once her fitness and volleys improve, she will be much better.
I'm not expecting her to do much at the WTA event, certainly not win it like someone suggested, so I think anything will be a bonus.

In any event, this will be a good tournament for her to make a WTA debut.

how would you compare to, say, Widjaja than,
i think she is quite similar to Angelique,
both unknown to the world, but a star in home countries,
Widjaja won her title at 16 as WC in her home WTA debut,
and never plays 10K event which she lost 1R before debut,
and who can forget about her match against Hsieh
so maybe she is gonna shine soon too......

I've seen her play and was impressed by her solid baseline game.

Sania ultimately needs more time and training. Basing herself in the US would be a great start. (Is she already based in the US?)
