Note the newspapers confusingly also called the event "the Interprovincial" matches or tournament. According to the Otago Witness the format was for sets to end once someone obtained 6 games except for the final, where a player had to win a set by two games. Though contested in 1887, this event is often listed as 1887/88 or 1888.
