Wo is likely to withdraw, who is likely to enter ?

With Seles and Capriati going out early in Australia, I wonder what this makes for the Toray event.

Will players decide to stay in AUS oder go home to the US and what does that mean for them playing here ?

Who will go deep into the AUS Open and therefore fill in if others withdraw ?

Look at Farina who went out early in AUS. There are a number of top20-30 players that went out of the AUS Open and could very well play the Paris indoor event with more time of preparation if going home. And what about Seles who injured herself in the 2nd round of the AUS Open ?

Seles and Capriati have not yet withdrawn, that I know of. Monica is seeing a doctor Friday to have xrays and treatment. I'm sure she'll decide what to do after she seeks doctors advice.

I just want someone withdraws, because I want Clarisa (Fernandez) in the main draw.

Martina Hingis, the best ever!!!

I think this event is kind of strange each year anyway.

Itīs just because of the tierI status that some take the way over Tokyo and indoor carpet after such a heat stress in Australia.

I think itīs weird that over the years, indoor specialists played Australia Tokyo and then Paris, itīs just hectic. Some years ago, we had Osaka (why isnīt there any other Asian event) now we have India which I suppose isnīt an indoor event though. I think the fact that the Williams f.e. and some more top8 players didnīt compete caused the advantage for Hingis&Davenport in recent years. Easy earned points. When you ask why Martina Hingis could stay on top for so long, itīs because girls like Jenn avoided playing here after such a heat in Australia. I wonder if Jenn is to play here with 1 1/2 week going home and Arabia later on. If she decided to stay in Melbourne or go to Japan early, itīs different.

Would be weird if Monica and Jenn both withdraw and Dokic is no1 in a tierI ?!

Draft

I say we draft either Serena or Venus to play here! What could they be offered to play?

I hope Monica can still play... maybe a late start will help her.

But isnīt it strange to go there after 1 1/2 weeks at home and then once again such a hectic flight ?

For both of them, Monica AND Jenn. I think it would have been more appropriate to get those players to Japan the last minute that are successful in Australia and replace those that went out early. So, f.e., the WTA trying to get Justine or Kim there. They love it indoors and with them not playing Paris, they could very well promote this event that lacks both the Williams and top5 level with Jenn dropping to no6 this week

Tokyo has the some of (if not the biggest) money incentives for women to compete. Many endorsement contracts are tied in one way or another to appearences. It's one reason certain women play there year after year. Withdrawing means losing a lot more cash than just the prize money.

ESPN just announced during Kim & Amanda's match that Monica is still in Melbourne... She was at some kind of dinner thing last night. Mary Carillo said she is staying here because she is in this tourney next week! This is great news!
