So far

Evie Dominikovic
Rachel McQuillan
Elena Baltacha
Akiko Morigami
Camille Pin

3 to come....I guess they will be Stosur, Watson & the last one out of Stewart and Grahame (I believe Christina Wheeler is injured and wont be playing as she is not in any lead ups )

The remaining 3 Maindraw WCs have been given to:

* Samantha Stosur
* Casey Dellacqua
* Adriana Szili

I wonder who got the Qualifying WCs?

Amazed at those choices! Well not Stosur, I always knew she'd get one, but the other 2 are surprising!

Dellacqua played well in Canberra, but Szili hasnt been setting the courts on fire lately...oh well, I think T.A is fed up with the vets (Watson, Grahame, Stewart) and decided to give the youngsters a go! I honestly think Adriana and Casey would be better off in qualies, but hey Im not a selector

Good luck to them!

danker...where did you get that info from? I'd also like to know who got the qualy wildcards, Im guessing it was more young kids...and Jaslyn Hewitt

I found a story on the official Aus Open

site.http://www.ausopen.org/en_AU/news/ar...7001e5b51.html

Tuesday January 7

Adriana Szili celebrated her 18th birthday yesterday and today received a follow-up present with the news that she has been awarded a wildcard entry into the Australian Open maindraw. The South Australian joins two other promising young Australia women, Samantha Stosur (aged 18) and Casey Dellacqua (17) as the final recipients of maindraw wildcards for the forthcoming Grand Slam.

Adriana Szili (SA)- Adriana Szili, is an AIS residential scholarship holder who has had an outstanding record in 2002 with a satellite singles win in Hamilton, New Zealand at the beginning of the year and was a finalist in two satellite tournaments in Japan in September.

Samantha Stosur- (QLD) The former Optus Achiever began her year with selection for the Australian Fed Cup team for the first round tie against Cup holders Belgium. Her impressive tally of one final, two semis and one quarter final on the Uncle Tobys Tour put her in close contention for one of the two Uncle Tobys wildcards on offer for the Australian Open maindraw and included victories against both Rachel McQuillan and Evie Dominikovic.

Casey Dellacqua- (WA)- The left hander has been on hot form over the past week defeating World ranked No.131 Mi-Ra Jeon of Korea in the opening round of qualifying at the Canberra Women's Classic before following this up with a victory over USA's Mashnova Washington (109) - both in straight sets. During the recent Uncle Tobys Tour, she raised her ranking 400 places from 850 to 450 over a six week period.

Other Australian Open maindraw wildcard recipients are:

French Open wildcards (nominated by the French Tennis Federation):
Richard Gasquet & Camille Pin

Asian Wildcards (to the winners of the men's and women's singles at the 2002 Asian Tennis Championships):
Goichi Motomura (JPN) & Akiko Morigami (JPN)

Wimbledon Wildcard (to one female nominated by the Lawn Tennis Association of Great Britain):
Elena Baltacha

Uncle Toby's Wildcards (to the best performed male on the Uncle Tobys Tour and one each to the highest placed women on the Queensland and South Australia legs of the Uncle Tobys Tour):
Joe Sirianni (Vic), Evie Dominikovic (NSW) & Rachel McQuillan (NSW)

Other wildcards:

Scott Draper (QLD), Ryan Henry (NSW), Andrew Ilie (Vic), Peter Luczak (Vic) & Todd Reid (NSW)

Qualifying wildcards went to

Lauren Breadmore
Gabrielle Baker
Olivia Lukaszewicz
Tiffany Welford
Lauren Cheung
Sophie Ferguson
Daniella Dominikovic
Anne Keothavong* (British recipient)

looks like my hunch about them going with youth has been proven correct! All players are teenagers and none are ranked higher than 400. Most of these girls will probably lose in the first round but it will be an amazing experience for them, all of them making their Grand Slam debut!

disappointed they didn't give at least 1 or 2 of them up for some of the veterans, but i can understand their reasoning aswell.

was hoping trudi musgrave would get a shot at qualifying after giving a good performance against lisa raymond this week

is christina horiatopolous injured? she really deserved a wildcard otherwise.

Yeah Randy Christina H, hasnt played since retiring from a doubles match in a South Aussie challenger in November

If she was fit she would be more deserving of Dellacqua and Szili for a MD wildcard...the poor girl has been ravaged by injuries so early in her career.

Wow, totally disgusted by some of these decisions!!!

Stosur and Dellacqua both deserved main draw wildcards but Szili?????? Cmon, what a joke!!! She didnt even really deserve one for qualies!!!!

I'm disgusted that veterans Dittmann and Musgrave were overlooked. Mireille has won rounds here the last two years and pushed her higher ranked opponent to 3 sets in Hobart.

Musgrave also was worthy of one, her form has turned the corner in the last 6 months and pushing Raymond only highlights this.

Lauren Breadmore, Gabrielle Baker, Tiffany Welford all deserved there wildcards

Olivia Lukaszewicz and Lauren Cheung not really up to par but scrape the line I guess

But Sophie Ferguson and Daniella Dominikovic what all a joke!!!!! Both girls havent even won a match at a Challenger yet, they have little experience and there were more deserving players!

Fine they want to give the wildcard to fresh up and coming players but there are better ones to chose!!!!!! How about Deanna Roberts for a start, she pushed Gubasci to 3 sets in Hobart and then Schett/Wartusch to 3 sets in doubles.

Jenny B, Trudi M and Mireille D, I feel for you all, you have been jibbed!

Still hopefully Evie scrapes into the main draw, then I guess Mireille might get the wildcard?

shame she was really playing quite well in 2002 aswell - hope she will be fit to play soon and carry on where she left off

also disappointed to see melissa dowse isn't a wildcard here, which may prove true that she retired

TA love Szili (just like they love Stosur) and last year I predicted she'd get one, but after her ordinary form in October/November challengers I thought her chances were shot...

Dittmann could get lucky still and scrape in the qualifiers....Trudi has obviously wasted so many chances in the past, but still, she took Lisa to 3 sets I'd expect people to notice that!!

I feel for Jenny Belobrajdic also, who has 16.5 points coming off, but honestly she doesnt really deserve it on current form. This reminds me of the USTA doing a similar thing when they gave all their Qual WC's to youngsters with little to no experience.

umm Szili made three finals and won one

Stosur and Szili are going to get pushed too much by TA and fall in a big whole

Szili... an interesting choice probably the lucky recipient of Wheeler's and Christina's H withdrawal.

I read in the paper that Bryanne Stewart was of the opinion that if she lost her 1st rnd wildcard match in Canberra she would be definitely in quallies. Maybe that was the criteria for her, Grahame, Watson by TA, to win a round this week or forget a maindraw w/c. I was suprised initally that Bryanne got a w/c in Canberra, I thought it was going to Stosur.

I don't feel any of the players like Dittman, Musgrave, Van Elden, Belobrajdic etc... should feel hard done by. Recent years of results from them all show that they won't qualify. They are beyond 'the getting experience' stage, and yes, they do tease us from time to time with a good result here and there, but they are not capable of stringing 3 victories together, so why reward them with another handout.

Happy that TA has taken a tougher stance.

There's more to life than just being happy.
