Big Changes 4 Doubles Entry System, Players get 2 use their singles ranking 2 get in!

AUSTRALIAN OPEN UNDERLINES ITS SUPPORT FOR DOUBLES

The Australian Open showed its support for the doubles game today with the announcement of initiatives to increase player participation, an increase in overall doubles prizemoney and the retention of the 64 player draw in doubles for the 2003 tournament.

In a first for a Grand Slam, players will be able to use their singles ranking for entry into the men’s doubles, with the signing-in deadline extended until near the end of the first round of singles to allow entries from top singles players who make an unexpected early exit. The numbers of players able to use their singles ranking for entry into the men’s doubles will be unrestricted.

The total prizepool for doubles at the forthcoming Australian Open will be AUS$3,654,456 (up three per cent) with $419,715 going to the winners of both the men’s and women’s doubles.

The winners of the men’s and women’s singles at the forthcoming Australian Open will see an increase from the one million dollar milestone reached last year to AUS$1,127,850, with $563,925 for each of the runners-up. The overall singles prizemoney is up 12.78 per cent on 2002 with the total prizepool also up over 10 per cent to an amazing AUS$18,180,000.

Australian Open Chief Executive Paul McNamee, said, “Australia, with its rich doubles tradition, remains a strong supporter of the doubles format and we are committed to growing the doubles pool alongside increasing total prizemoney for the tournament.

“The changes in entry conditions which allow an unrestricted number of players to use their singles ranking to enter doubles, coupled with a later signing in time, opens up doubles to more players and can only be a bonus for the fans and players alike.

“We are also continuing our commitment to equal prizemoney for men and women, in both singles and doubles, which underlines the wider commitment in Tennis Australia to developing the sport for both sexes,” said McNamee.

It appears that this system is only applicable to the Mens Doubles. I applaud it and think it is a step in the right direction to increasing participation by the top players.

Whaaaaaaat? I don't think it's fair as low ranked doubles players will have to travel to Australia just hoping one of the richest and best singles players doesn't feel like entering at last minute or they won't be able to compete...

But I, being poor, have only my dreams
I have spread my dreams under your feet
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams

It's so unfair, at least it's only in mens doubles.

if they wanted to play doubles they would

stupid new rule from the ATP

anyways the top singles guys who want to play doubles always get a WC in doubles if they ask for one.

Good luck to my favs

I think its because men's doubles tend to be dominated by doubles specialists. Its like having on the women's side Renaee Stubbs type players controlling the top of doubles and actually having the women's draw consist of only doubles players.

The ATP has attempted to "force" the top men to play hence the WC option TBE named. I mean if you look at it, Wayne Black, Kevin Ullyett, Mahesh Bhupathi, Leander Paes, Sandon Stolle, Vacek, Rikl, the Bryan brother's they are basically not even on the radar of singles, and hence no one knows who they are.

Guys, do you really think that any top 10 or top 20 singles player will care about playing doubles after an embarrassing 1st round loss???

you are right.
It´s unfair, Australia is not at the corner (for most of the players)

Eleni Daniilidou - Iveta Benesova - Melanie Klaffner - Gisela Dulko - Daniela Hantuchova - Jelena Dokic - Karolina Sprem -

Akenatón rules, Horemheb sucks

The problem is what to make with the so far top40 doubles ranked players if the field is swept with top singles players ?

I doubt though that much of the singles players will enter the field rather than leaving for training after 4 weeks in hot Australia.

I agree with those who made the Stubbs-comparison though I believe that the Black-brothers are high profile players in their country and have a number of unexpected singles victories as well. Think of Wayne Arthurs f.e. as well.

All in all, the article says nothing about the guys that so far led doubles and no they cannot even travel to Australia being guaranteed to play ? That is such a problem for them not knowing what happens with them - unfair.
