Czech team may withdraw from Fed Cup

From Associated Press

The Czech Republic might withdraw from its first-round Fed Cup match in the United States because of fears about a possible terrorist attack, a newspaper reported.

"Our feelings are based on what's going on in the world,'' Czech Tennis Association head Ivo Kaderka said, according to the Web edition of the Mlada Fronta Dnes daily.

The best-of-five Fed Cup series is scheduled for April 26-27 in Lowell, Mass. The Czechs will decide April 16 whether to play, the report said.

"We have not been contacted by the Czech Federation. We're looking forward to a sold-out Fed Cup event,'' U.S. Tennis Association spokesman David Newman said Wednesday.

Sisters Serena and Venus Williams have been chosen to lead the U.S. team. It would be the fifth time in Fed Cup history that the world's two top players will be on the same team. The United States has won a record 17 Fed Cup titles.

The ITF fined the USTA immediately after skipping 2001 Fed Cup Final.

excerpt from article:

In 2001, the defending Fed Cup champion United States withdrew from the Fed Cup finals held in Madrid, Spain out of concern of a potential terrorist threat in the aftermath of the September 11th attack on America.

The International Tennis Federation fined the USTA immediately after that withdrawal. A week after the final, 11 members with likely links to the Al Qaeda terrorist organization were arrested in Madrid.

Report States Czech Republic Considering Skipping Fed Cup Tie In U.S.

The Czech Republic Fed Cup team may withdraw from its first-round tie against the United States scheduled for April 26th-27th in Lowell, Mass. due to concerns over a potential terrorist attack. "Our feelings are based on what's going on in the world," Czech Tennis Association chief Ivo Kaderka was quoted as saying by the Mlada Fronta Dnes daily in a remark that was reprinted by the Associated Press. A final decision on whether the Czech squad will make the trip to Lowell will be made by April 16th, according to the report. USTA spokesman David Newman told the AP there has been no official contact from the Czech federation about a potential withdrawal. "We have not been contacted by the Czech Federation," Newman told the AP. "We're looking forward to a sold-out Fed Cup event." In 2001, the defending Fed Cup champion United States withdrew from the Fed Cup finals held in Madrid, Spain out of concern of a potential terrorist threat in the aftermath of the September 11th attack on America.

The International Tennis Federation fined the USTA immediately after that withdrawal. A week after the final, 11 members with likely links to the Al Qaeda terrorist organization were arrested in Madrid. Czech Republic Captain Petra Langrova has until April 16th to name her team members. U.S. captain Billie Jean King has selected top-ranked Serena Williams, second-ranked Venus Williams, Meghann Shaughnessy and Alexandra Stevenson to the U.S. team that has won a record 17 Fed Cup championships. It took less than a single working day for the U.S. squad to sell out as tickets went on sale to the general public on Friday, February 21st at 10 a.m. and all 5,741 tickets were sold out six hours later, by 4 p.m. "I'm thrilled we have an unbelievable team," King said. "Because we announced the Williams sisters on the team weeks ago we sold out right away."

Czech team will not withdraw. The decision (and I'm sure the right decision) was made today.

Nomination:
Daja Bedanova
Klara Koukalova
Iveta Benesova
Eva Birnerova

Good luck girls, you will need it!
