– Captain Billie Jean King Selects Team for Historic Sell Out Event vs. Czech Republic In Lowell, Mass., April 26-27 –

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The USTA and U.S. Fed Cup Captain Billie Jean King today announced that Meghann Shaughnessy, the world’s No. 22 ranked singles player, and Alexandra Stevenson, the No. 27 ranked singles player, have been named to the U.S. team that will face the Czech Republic in the 2003 Fed Cup first round, April 26-27, at the sold out Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass.

Shaughnessy and Stevenson will join teammates, No. 1 ranked Serena Williams and No. 2 ranked Venus Williams against the Czech Republic. Czech Republic Captain Petra Langrova has until April 16 to name her team members.

“Meghann is carrying great momentum into this event with a terrific run at the Australian Open and we’re excited about Alexandra’s debut as a U.S. Fed Cup rookie,” said King. “The quest for the 2003 Fed Cup will be challenging, but with the top players in singles and doubles in Serena and Venus and the solid performances of Meghann and Alexandra, we are starting with a strong team against the Czech Republic.”

Shaughnessy, 23, from Scottsale, Ariz., is the holder of three WTA Tour singles titles and three doubles titles, most recently winning 2003 Canberra without losing a set. Shaughnessy reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the 2003 Australian Open. This Fed Cup event marks Shaughnessy’s third, having competed against both Austria and Israel in 2002.

Stevenson, 22, from Los Angeles, Calif., will make her Fed Cup debut in Lowell, Mass. Stevenson holds one WTA Tour doubles title (partnering with Serena Williams) and represented the U.S. in the 1999 Pan American games. She had her best Grand Slam finish at Wimbledon in 1999, as first woman qualifier to reach the semifinals.

Young Americans Jamea Jackson and Ally Baker were selected as hitting partners for King's squad.

well, i dont think Lindsay wants to go to Olympics anyways,
she withdrew from Olympics last time,
what's the point of going.......she already got a gold medal,
why would she wanna go again,
and play doubles which she has "less success" in.....

Lisa should have picked Rubin for double's partner though,
that at least increases her chance of getting in......

What do you mean? I think it`s an honour to go to the Olympics to represent your country. Lindsay had to withdraw in Sydney because of an injury. She is always 100 % there for her country and her team. I am sure she`ll play if she is asked.

Best Team: Singles: Jennifer, Lindsay, Monica Doubles: Lindsay/Lisa!

No FUCKING shit! BJK chose her merely as a hitting partner not a singles player for the team. Talk about tactless comments.

Venus-Serena-Roger

Kuzy/Vika/Sharacoco?!?

clay season will ALWAYS be the speed bump in front of the grass season.

Tennis without Serena is like cornflake without the milk!
