That's why it would have been better for her to play Montreal this week. Start off on a slower HC so the change to the faster Cincy courts isn't as extreme, and she''d have matches under her belt.

If it have been better she would have played there. I doubt she skips such a big event without serious reasons. That means she felt she needed a long rest after RG-Wim-Bucherest. While she was playing in the second week of Wimbledon and then in Bucharest most players were already lying on the beach

Simona's 'placings':
3rd on 2nd serve points won (50.0%)
5th on service games won (74.3%)
4th on points won on return of 1st serve (43.4%)
3rd on points won on return of 2nd serve (59.9%)
4th on break points converted (52.9%)
2nd on return games won (48.7%)

Of the 4 stats she isn't in the Top 10 for, she has these numbers:
Aces: 113 (Top 15-20?)
1st serve percentage: 61.6%
1st service points won: 67.2% (probably 11th or 12th)
Break points saved: 58.2% (Top 15?)

Source: http://www.wtatennis.com/players/pla...na-halep#stats

Strong on almost every stat! Only her 1st serve % is quite a way off, but it doesn't seem to affect her service stats too badly. However, looking at the Top 10 for 1st serve %, having a high number doesn't correlate with being a top 10 player anyway (are these players going for safety first?) - the same was true in 2013 (Simona was 9th with 67.7% then, but none of the Top 10 in that category were Top 10 players).
A small player with a strong serve will inevitably have a low 1st serve percentage. It's an issue of net clearance. 61.6% is actually very good under the circumstances. Justine's was always down in the mid 50s.

Too much slow HC ruined both tours.

I have 15 or more maybe.
Indeed you are right. Love fast courts

I'm tempted to put more on...but then I miss reading the drama.

Not really. Not many have insulted me on GM yet besides a certain Italian poster who seems to hate every player and a certain Ula Radwanska hater.

I wonder what fan base that is...

Yeah, Halep is 1.68m, while Cibulkova is 1.61m "tall". But Cibulkova can maintain her sparkling results only for SHORT TIMES (the result of her "full throttle" mode playing). Halep, on the contrary, can play her high level game for quite a long time (now at least for 18 months, and still counting!). So, she must be a better inspiration for sure...

Yeah, 0.07m is almost "head". Generally all 3 girls are small, including Simona. But Simona give stable result and impoves. However I just checked tallness of Nara Kurumi, and it is 1.58 m and 1.55m at different sources. Hmm, Japanese girl is really small.

Simona is small but Cibulkova and Nara are tiny...

Kvitova [20] - Simona [15]

Aga [20] - Sevastova [2] - Kasatkina [1] - Cetkovska - Bencic [2] - Rybarikova [4]

Re: Simona Halep Cheering thread - volume 3

Well, when i posted that comment i wasn't lumping Simona with short players. It was meant to highlight that shorter players like Nara, who don't play a power game, are learning how to play a smart game by watching our Simona. Even though Nara is close to Cibulkova in height, she prefers Simona's style of play as it is more sustainable and produces reliable results.

Re: Simona Halep Cheering thread - volume 3

Finally, I have finished the archive thread of Simona's journey to her first Grand Slam final - ROLAND GARROS 2014 Archive: Simona's Journey To Her First Grand Slam Final!

I lost some momentum on it, only to pick it up again in the last couple of weeks. It was more work than I imagined when I suggested it!

Anyway, I hope it is a fitting tribute to Simona and her efforts in Paris. In summarising our thoughts about her prospects and matches during the fortnight, I have had to generalise somewhat but I think and hope it is an accurate summary of what the majority of us were thinking at the time (going by the comments I recall here and in GM). By its nature, it's impressionistic of the prevailing mood so don't shoot me if your personal view is not represented. However, if I've really got it wrong somewhere I'm open to editing it.

Some really nice action pics in there. Don't be too surprised if you see cartoon versions of one or two of them in the near future
