18 & under - winter grand prix masters

These are the 16 players involved in the event at Redbridge (Fairlop)
from Thursday to Sunday:

Rebecca Llewellyn
Elizabeth Flint
Carina Dalton
Nicola Allan
Melissa Gibb
Holly Bagshaw
Janice Torr
Lena Keothavong
Mhairi Neish
Danielle Brown
Jenny Broughall
Melanie South
Claire Peterzan
Rebecca Fong
Georgina Hingley
Claire Ricketts

The event doesn't start until 6pm tomorrow evening. Hence Melanie South is still set to play, despite her continuing involvement in the British tour event.

Indeed I may well go up to Fairlop tomorrow evening to watch some of the matches. Fortunately, I'm working 8:30 until 16:30 tomorrow.

Well, they both won today Randy, with relative ease.

The full results from tonight's under 18 tournaent were

Rebecca Llewellyn BEAT Elizabeth Flint 6-2, 6-2
In both sets Flint started well taking early 2-1 leads, but running out of steam against the more experienced Llewellyn
Carina Dalton LOST TO Nicola Allan 2-6, 7-5, 1-6
Melissa Gibb LOST TO Holly Bagshaw 2-6, 2-6
I didn't think Gibb played well either tonight or last weekend. It's hard to believe she has a better rating than Bagshaw (although the rating updates will be released next week).
Janice Torr LOST TO Lena Keothavong 7-6, 2-6, 4-6
The longest match of the day. Two matches were played on the adjacent court during the time it took this match to finish.
Mhairi Neish LOST TO Danielle Brown 2-6, 6-7
Jenny Broughall LOST TO Melanie South 3-6, 2-6
This was South's second match of the day, after winning her British tour match earlier on. I think she's arranging to have her Masters (which are NOT in the evening tomorrow, unlike today) match played early tomorrow, so she can go on to Sutton.
Claire Peterzan BEAT Rebecca Fong 6-3, 6-0
The most straightforward win of the evening. Fong really didn't put up much of a struggle.
Georgina Hingley LOST TO Claire Ricketts 3-6, 2-6
Ricketts fell after stretching for a wide ball at 1-0 up in the
second set, but it didn't seem to affect her as she overpowered the younger Hingley.

P.S my apologies if there's any score inaccuracies, that's what happens when you're following 4 matches at once!!!

I didn't see much of the under 14s event but I did see some of Laura Peterzan (Claire's little sister, who looks virtually identical, and also they both wear glasses) beating Vanessa Clarke (who was in the under 12s last week) 6-2, 6-2

Unfortunately the results aren't on the LTA page yet for today's matches.

Only the players who lost both today and yesterday will have been eliminated (4 of them). That will leave the 8 players who have 1-1 records after today's matches, to play play-offs tomorrow, to determine who plays in the quarters in the afternoon. Their opponents will be the players who had 2-0 records after today's matches.

I'll definitely be going to watch the tournament tomorrow and Sunday, so results will be posted in the evening

Firstly, Friday's results were:

Elizabeth Flint BEAT Carina Dalton 6-3, 1-6, 7-5
Melissa Gibb BEAT Janice Torr 6-1, 6-1
Mhairi Neish BEAT Jenny Broughall 6-4, 6-2
Rebecca Fong LOST TO Georgina Hingley 6-4, 7-6
Rebecca Llewellyn BEAT Nicola Allan 6-2, 6-2
Hannah Bagshaw BEAT Lena Keothavong 6-0, 6-4
Danielle Brown LOST TO Melanie South 7-5, 6-4
Claire Peterzan LOST TO Claire Ricketts 7-5, 6-0

Now onto Saturday's results. First the play-offs

Nicola Allan BEAT Melissa Gibb (walkover, after losing 1st set)
At first, it just looked like cramp as Gibb was being treated.
So I was really surprised when she withdrew.
Elizabeth Flint LOST TO Lena Keothavong 4-6, 3-6
Danielle Brown BEAT Georgina Hingley 6-4, 6-7, 6-2
Mhairi Neish LOST TO Claire Peterzan 6-7, 6-3, 3-6

Then the quarter-finals:

Rebecca Llewellyn BEAT Danielle Brown 6-4, 6-0
Hannah Bagshaw LOST to Claire Peterzan 6-3, 5-7, 6-7
A very tight match. Two well-matched players with similar style. Neither of whom has a particularly quick serve

Melanie South LOST TO Nicola Allan 2-6, 2-6
A thoroughly exhausted looking performance from South, who looked barely recognisable from the player who has performed so well in recent weeks.
Claire Ricketts BEAT Lena Keothavong 6-3, 6-2.

Also, it was interesting to see Sam Smith (ex-player, now Eurosport analyst) watching the morning's play.

The semi-finals tomorrow will be

Rebecca Llewellyn (1119) V Claire Peterzan (2.1)
Claire Ricketts (1236) V Nicola Allan (2.1)

with the final in the afternoon

Today's 18 & under semi-final results were:

Rebecca Llewellyn LOST TO Claire Peterzan 3-6, 6-3, 3-6.
A shock win for the much younger player, who was the
losing finalist in the 14 & under last year. Interesting
contrast of styles too, with Llewellyn complaining
about several line-calls, and loudly berating herself for bad
shots. This compares to Peterzan who barely shows any
emotion on court
Claire Ricketts BEAT Nicola Allan 6-2, 6-0
A stroll for Ricketts against Allan, who really does need a
bit more power in her serve, which really isn't any kind of
And the final was:
Claire Peterzan LOST TO Claire Ricketts 3-6, 0-6
Despite the scoreline, this was a much closer match than
Ricketts' semi, with there being numerous tight games.
Interestingly, Melanie South who was watching today's matches, was holding an ice bag against her elbow much of the time. I wonder if a problem there contributed to her poor performance against Nicola Allan yesterday?

In the 14 & under event, Laura Peterzan (2.3) won her semi-final
against Laura Burns (3.1) 6-3, 6-4 and then the final against Jessica Weeks (2.3): 6-3, 7-5
