16 & under Winter Grand Prix Masters

Here the results from the third day of the event which took place at Welwyn Garden City today:

Group play-offs:

Katy Williams (2:2 - Herts) LOST TO Natasha Khan (2.1 Susx) 0-6, 2-6
Kendal Spark (2.2 - Nthbld) LOST TO Alice MacKenzie (2.1 Yorks)
1-6, 0-6
Kirsty Woolley (2.2 - Susx) BEAT Holly Richards (2.3 Kent) 6-2, 7-5
Elizabeth Flint (2.3 - Avon) LOST TO Jenny Broughall (2.2 Wales) 4-6, 2-6

Quarter-finals

Melanie South (1.5 - Surrey) BEAT Kirsty Woolley 6-0, 6-4
Jenny Broughall LOST TO Nicola Allan (2.1 - SCOT) 2-6, 1-6
Holly Bagshaw (2.1 - Herts) BEAT Natasha Khan 2 sets to love, 7-5 in second set (don't know 1st set score, as didn't see any of it)
Alice Mackenzie BEAT Melissa Gibb (1.5 Bucks) 6-1, 7-5

So a very good day for MacKenzie, especially beating Gibb, a player with a higher rating than herself, in straight sets.

There was a 16 & under boys, and 12 & under (boys and girls events) at the same venue. The notable thing about the boys event was how many arguments over line calls there were (the players referee their own matches in these events).

u16s Masters

Any news on the winner of this event. Having said that it was a weakend field with the absence of Flavell, Grady and O'Brien who are in the Far East.

The semi-final results were:

Holly Bagshaw BEAT Alice Mackenzie 6-3, 6-0

Strange match this one. The first 6 games were ALL breaks of serve, as both players looked very nervy, then Holly found her rhythm, and without playing particularly well, destroyed an exhausted looking Mackenzie

The worrying for Mackenzie is that, though her serve was a powerful weapon in yesterday's matches, she didn't win a game on it today.

Melanie South BEAT Nicola Allan 6-4, 7-5

A higher standard of match altogether. Lots of long rallies, from two evenly matched players.

FINAL RESULT

Holly Bagshaw LOST TO Melanie South 2-6, 0-6

Surprisingly, given their contrasting semi-finals, Bagshaw looked the more tired of the two. South hit lots of deep shots, and she displayed a great level of accuracy throughout

Next week it's the under-18s (along with the under 14s) at Redbridge (Fairlop).

Are the girls playing a tournament in the Far East?

If so, do you have any details.
