Mona Barthel: She cannot win anymore
About a year ago, it seemed as if it would be only a matter of time before Mona Barthel manages the jump into the top ten of world tennis rankings. On March 18 2013 it was published by the WTA that the Neumünsteran was ranked 23 - never before she was better placed. Back then Barthel was preparing to outshine other German professionals like the long-term injured Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt), Sabine Lisicki (Berlin) or the Bad Oldesloerian Julia Goerges. The German Tennis Federation (DTB) were about to dream to be able to celebrate a lot of successes in the Fed Cup with the northern duo Angelique Kerber and Mona Barthel after a long dry spell. It all remained only dreams, because afterwards Barthel’s star descended as fast as it had previously risen. In March 2014, the 23- year-old is only world ranked 85.
Six first-round defeats in 2014
On Monday, the Schleswig-Holsteinian once again failed at the attempt to take the opening hurdle in a tournament. In the polish city of Katowice Barthel lost without any chance against the three years younger Annika Beck by 1:6, 4:6. It just happened after 1:09 hours. It was the sixth opening defeat for the North German this year. Only in Hobart and Dubai (both second round) and at the Australian Open (third round) the 23-year-old won matches. Before traveling to Katowice she started in Miami and had to give up the match against the Swedish qualifier Rebecca Peterson in the second set due to illness. However, Barthel was behind at that time by 4:6, 2:4.
Split from her coach Maik Schürbesmann
In Miami and in Indian Wells earlier the Neumünsteran got coached by Nic Marschand for the first time, after she separated from her longtime coach Maik Schürbesmann at the beginning of March. "We have worked together for eight years. I want to thank him for all the support and help he has given me over the years. But I think it's time for me to try something new," said Barthel. In the upcoming weeks and months, it remains to be seen whether it was the right decision to withdraw her confidence from Schürbesmann. Barthel doesn’t have to defend many ranking points until the end of the year. In case the series of losses does not continue she can rise up the rankings again.
I have such good memories from playing in Stuttgart and I am so happy to be back here. I will play my first round of Qualies tomorrow against Agnes Bukta on the Center Court. I am so much looking forward being back on the Court were I celebrate so much success.
I hope you all had a happy Easter! I definetely had one. I won my match 6:1 6:2 against Antonia Lottner today. Antonia is a talented player, but I am happy with my performance today.
Tomorrow I play Ajla Tomljanovic second after 1 o'clock on Center Court. Let's do this.
I won my first round in Nürnberg today against Belinda Bencic 7:6 6:3. It is so nice to have another tournament in Germany and to play in front of your home crowd. Tomorrow I will have a day off and I will play my next round either against Annika Beck or Jana Cepelova. Have a nice Sunday!
Got all the stuff I need today from Prince Tennis to make this French Open succesful. Feeling very spoiled!
I am so much looking forward to this years Roland Garros. My last tournament in Nürnberg showed me I am on the right way.
I will play my first round against Karin Knapp on Monday.
Whereat Mona Barthel has gone out of the tournament after a real drama in the "bull arena". The 23 years old... already lead 5-3 in the third set against Pauline Parmentier but eventually lost after about 2 hours match time. "I`m simply speechless", Barthel said being in tears.
"Anscheinend war ich wohl doch zu nervös beim 5:3. Ich weiß auch nicht, ich habe mein Spiel im zweiten Satz irgendwie verloren. Auch im dritten Satz bin ich eigentlich nicht richtig reingekommen, habe aber doch das Break geschafft. Dann mache ich es nicht, danach hatte ich auch noch mal 0:30 - Chancen hatte ich wirklich genug. Und der Sturz war auch nicht der Grund, das war nicht zu schlimm", so Barthel.
"Obviously I was too nervous at 5-3. Well I don`t know, I somehow lost my game in the second set. In the third set I didn`t really get into it aswell, but I still managed to break her. Then I didn`t close it out and afterwards at 5-4* 0-30 there was another chance. I actually had enough opportunities to take it. Und my fall wasn`t a reason either, it was not that bad", Barthel said
