But this is clearly not the draw i was hoping for.
I also think this is a good draw. It takes pressure off her and will allow her to fight harder and with less fear, and she actually leads the head to head.

That doesn't mean she is necessarily favourite to win, but she will probably be able to put out a good performance here.

Re: Mona Barthel - Volume 2

Tough but best among top 8.
I have an impression Wozniacki and Kerber are her special adversaries. They await there as human turnaround points for Barthel. How will it be this time?

Re: Mona Barthel - Volume 2

its important for a rising player to play top players to gauge where they and their game are at...Shes not played Serena yet...if she gets to the QRTRS whe will be able to test herself against the best

True. But Angie isn't THAT great on clay and Mona can be great on clay when she wants to be. Remember Stuttgart last year?

Re: Mona Barthel - Volume 2

Stuttgart is indoors. Different conditions compared to RG. Kerber played great in Stuttgart too in the last 2 years. Mona certainly has a chance to win but Angie is the clear fav to win since she had much better results on clay compared to Mona in the last 2 years.

Re: Mona Barthel - Volume 2

As you all have said, Mona has nothing to lose, and Angie, incidentally, everything to lose.

Mona is 2:1 against her, including a thrashing at Doha this year, but this is their first meeting on clay.

BARBIE
is coming for your towel, too.

Re: Mona Barthel - Volume 2

Looks like the various different posters have summed up the complications of this draw. It's simultaneously a good and bad draw. Psychologically it's an opportunity to get a really big win at a slam though. Basically she has drawn a top player who seems vulnerable on this surface. So if she loses, she loses to a top player, if she wins it's a big win- from a media perspective it's a no lose situation although of course getting a soft draw and running deep in a tournament is better for picking up points. Somewhat similar to Robson drawing Wozniacki, although possibly not quite as nice a draw as that.

Re: Mona Barthel - Volume 2

Pretty much everything said about this match.
Angie is not quite sure whether she`s fine with her abdominals. It obviously still affects her on her serve.

It will be interesting to see whether Mona has taken advantage of this little break . Hopefully she is entirely recovered, clear in her mind and able to shake off the bad memories of her latest performances.

Angie actually is a good match-up for Mona. I can`t see it very different because of the surface. So here we go, Mona !

I remember that Angie had similar problems with her abdominals when she played against Sabine in Doha 2012. Although she couldn't really serve back then she still won the match. So i expect that Angie will be competitive.

But you are right, she always used to be a good matchup for Mona.

Re: Mona Barthel - Volume 2

Angie plays most of her matches without a serve, effectively, anyway. She's lefty so she doesn't need to serve that well to stop people killing her serve, if it spins slowly into the backhand with lefty spin it's quite hard to attack.

However, that is precisely why Mona has two wins over her. Mona's backhand is strong so she is less vulnerable to leftiness.

The real problem for Angie will be if whatever injuries she has affects her ground game, movement or fitness, which is the real core of her game. For instance, if her injuries have forced her to take it easy on the off court work she may not be 100% in terms of anaerobic or aerobic fitness.
