Mona starts her season in the q-draw of Auckland:

(2)Linette v Barthel
(wc)Carswell v (wc)Claudia Williams
Aoyama v Razzano
(wc)Routliffe v (8)Jakupovic

An abbreviated 2016 saw her ranking plummet out of the Top 100 for the first time in 5 years. Can she rebound?

Mona beat Madga in three tough sets, 62 46 64. Mona couldn't quite rebound from a deficit in the second, and was up 4-1 in the third and made that a bit difficult, but won the last set to love on Madga's serve.

Second round should be quick and dirty

She shouldn't have any trouble against Jo. Probably will be around 1 & 1. Jo didn't have any power last time I saw her a year or two ago. Mona should be hitting winners left and right. Kind of an old school player, smart but doesn't have the shots. Maybe she's improved a bit, I honestly didn't even expect Jo to beat Claudia (and Mona would beat her comfortably too) but then again Claudia has had some kind of injury which has meant she hasn't played matches in a long time. I would back NZers Paige Hourigan and Rosie Cheng to beat Jo- and neither could beat Mona. Paige does have the forehand power to be dangerous mind you and Rosie seems to have some talent to develop. Well in my opinion Jo would be maybe the fourth or fifth best Kiwi girl, and really only Marina should have any chance against Mona.

Promising end of the season in Dubai (except for the choke against Hsieh) and a good start into 2017 now also in Auckland!
Brengle/Lucic/Lepchenko/Strycova in MD now, Brengle or Lucic-Baroni hopefully, the last matches against Lepchenko/Strycova weren´t that great but we´ll see :p

Would love to see the Mona play J'La. Like both players.... Hope it happens....

Btw, I think Mona's match with LB is streamed and it's on the 3rd court at the Auckland. Streaming 3 courts at an international event is unprecedented I think. Yet, given the quality of talent and the competition here it's not surprising, for, imo, it's the best of all the warm-up events for the AO.

Fell, 36 63 36 to Mirjana  Still, this was a good start to the year, continuing where she left off in December.

a bit disappointed but I couldn´t watch it, so tough to judge!
Lucic had a bad end of 2016 but she obviously is tough to play if she does not make too many UEs, seems like it was windy also, not easy then and Mona just wasted too many chances in first set (0/9 BPs), still a good start into 2017, I hope she can qualify now for Melbourne, should be possible with a decent draw.

SYDNEY,Q:

(4)Chirico v Cepelova
Lepchenko v Duan
(wc)Myers v (wc)Ar. Rodionova
Barthel v (6)Kovinic

Surprised to see her in Sydney and not Hobart but she will be forced to tank at some point anyway because of the Melbourne Q

Draw is ok, Kovinic can be tricky but usually is not that great on hardcourt, then two WCs, I hope she can reach FQR here and then go to Melbourne with a good feeling!! :)
