Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Quite a big leap from the $25ks we expect her to enter. It just proves that we have absolutely no idea what her plans are!
Surprise, Surprise Laura's eschewing an ITF return in favour of a bigger WTA event.

Risky gamble in my opinion. With it seemingly being her first match back it's unlikely that she's going to progress far in the draw (read: she's probably losing in R1) which would waste her SR as well as make her look like she doesn't belong at these events (at this point, anyway).

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Well let's hope it goes smoothly. You never know.

The news is that JMDP had wrist surgery with Dr. Berger today.
Worrying. I hope it's just a matter of him trying to comeback too early and nothing more serious. Laura seems to have learned that lesson and is rightfully taking her time.

Oh and happy birthday, Laura :aparty:

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

She didn't play a lot of ITF anyway... because she was given wildcard after wildcard to big events... and then she had enough points to enter qualifying and some WTA main draw...

She's probably feeling better about her recovery becuase it seems she wanna use the same method that made her rise the ranking.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Surprize entry list is out and Laura is not on it. The only realistic event she can play before Indian Wells is the following week in Rancho Santa Fe, California. List will be out a week today.

Why do I get the feeling that she's scrapped the idea of an ITF comeback in favour of the big stage?

What a surprise! She hasn't entered Surprise. Maybe she couldn't get a Wildcard (or she might not even know if she can yet)?

I'm kind of nervous about her comeback match now. Although at least she won't be playing Serena or Venus in her first match back. But virtually any other top 100 player is on the cards...:tape:

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Confirmed by The Guardian. Obviously there's no certainty but her plan is to play Surprise and Santa Fe...

Laura Robson, out for a year with a wrist injury, returns to tennis next month in a place called Surprise.

Her agent, Max Eisenbud, confirmed on Thursday that the former British No1 will play in two ITF $25,000 tournaments, in Surprise, near Phoenix, Arizona from 16 February, then Rancho Santa Fe, near San Diego, the following week.

“The plan is for Laura to play those two small tournaments late in February before she uses her protected ranking to get into Indian Wells,” Eisenbud said. “But everything is tentative. We will not be rushed into anything and we are quite prepared to change the plan if necessary.

“We want her to be properly ready and, if that is not the case, then she won’t play. We are not going to take any chances and want to be sensible about this whole thing. Right now she is practising in Bradenton [at Nick Bollettieri’s academy] and the wrist is fine, that’s not the problem. It’s not a matter of fitness either. We just want Laura to attain the necessary level of tennis, and people have got to remember she has been out for more than a year. Going into these smaller tournaments she could play day after day and we have got to make sure she is ready for that kind of schedule.

“We don’t want to pick up a different injury because her body is not properly reconditioned to play day-after-day tennis. I have had a lot of experience in this kind of thing with Maria [Sharapova]. The important thing in bringing a player back after a very long time away from the game is to be smart.”

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Surprise has quite a decent entry list for a 25k, lots of familiar names. Usually the ITF entry lists clear up quite a bit in time, but still, 18 Top 200 players is nothing to sneeze at.

Nobody to be really scared off, though, I think this might be a good start for her.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

I'd say most likely Laura decided against playing here, but usually a 25k tournament director would murder to have a player with a name like Laura's at his tournament.
For a 25K? I'm not sure the TD would show such a passion, though it's more plausible that an American TD would than, say, a British one.

In any case, in theory, it's not his call, it's the USTA's.

I agree that Laura wouldn't want to play 25K qualies, though I'd be happy if she made a fool of me.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

At least around here the people running these smaller ITFs (that are the absolute highlight of the year for the local club) put so much into them, so I wouldn't doubt their passion at all. Though it might be that the USTA and their infinite funding result in assembly line tournaments that they just want to get over with, I don't know.

I agree with you more than likely she decided against it . Her agent would not have announced it otherwise
