Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Anne Keothavong started her commentary career very similarly this time last year. Very softly spoken and sounded almost embarrassed to say anything without being asked. I have never heard her commentate on BT sport so this year's Wimbledon was the first time I heard her again and the transformation is remarkable. Unrecognisable to me at first.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

I remember Anne being invited to do a bit of commentary by Eurosport, years ago. I think it was just after her first round double bagel drubbing by Safina at Garros, and she was so reticent and almost monosyllabic.

I think it takes a bit of time to feel at ease in that situation.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Gratuitous snark from Mac about Laura at the start of the Pilchard SF.

"Nick Saviano had a decision to make: Robson or Bouchard. Where's Laura right now?"
Wow, what a bitch. :fiery: Surely coaching should be more about the challenge of making someone improve? Bouchard seems pretty self-sufficent, what's so satisfying about that?

He's also in favour of playing let cords on serve :smash:

Back to Laura, I can't help but think of her when I see Genie's success on the tour. I'm happy for Genie but she's baring the brunt of my frustration with just how different their year has been (unfair of me, I know). I still think Laura is a far superior talent and has more potential. Just goes to show what a solid mind set, hard work and a bit of luck can do to a player.

Laura and Genie kind of remind me Petra (lefty with big power but poor moving) and Vika (aggressive, takes the ball early but doesn't have huge power) respectively. I think Petra is a lot more talented than Vika but Vika has had a lot better career to this point.

Unluckily for me, we don't get BBC commentary in my country. :(

I think that was well done.

Thanks for the recap below. I couldn't watch the BBC video. I think it's geo-blocked where I live. :(

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b048hnrl

If anyone didn't catch it link above for Laura commentating on the final for 5 Live. Thought she did very well, she's actually asked at the beginning about the rift in a roundabout way by Claire Balding who asks if she was surprised to be front page along with her. Thought she handled it very graciously personally. She didn't discuss it directly either, just said it was very awkward and that it was Bouchard's day and it should only be about the tennis, and sort of hinted that tennis reporter's bringing that into a preview of the final is a bit cheap, but not a hint of criticism of Bouchard throughout the commentary and a bit of commiseration at the end where she says Bouchard did nothing at all wrong and said no one could have beaten Petra today.

Anyway Wimbledon have cut the actual response from the articles out of the press conference video, so you can't look it up to second guess tone or intonation! I hope Laura's long over it now, and she doesn't lack for other friends anyway, she's obviously very popular on tour, and MANY of the other players are very successfully and still friendly and courteous with other's on tour, including Wozniacki, Williams, Azarenka and many of the newer players, believing you can't or shouldn't have friends on tour is clearly just a mindset certain people have.

Someone had the balls (surprise not the Daily Fail) to ask Saviano about what happened between the girls.

... Saviano told Yahoo Sports.
"I stay out of it. It had very, very, very little if anything to do with me. It's not my business, it has nothing to do with me," he said. "I just hope Laura's wrist heals soon and she's able to get back and recommence her career. How could you wish anything but that?"

Saviano said it's between the two of them. "Genie is a young adult and has every right to pick and choose her friends, and who she chooses to be involved with socially."
Both of them have moved on. Laura will be happiest when she's competing again I'm sure. I really enjoyed her interaction with Marion. I had to spoof my IP to listen to the BBC streams.

Saviano's been dragged into the business? Poor Nick! Not surprised to learn that all the speculation about the off-season coaching arrangements being the cause of Genie and Laura's "feud" turned out to be a red herring. Saviano has regularly acted as consultant/coach to more than one player at a time and it was perfectly clear from the initial press releases that his role with Laura was purely that of consultant.

Anyway Wimbledon have cut the actual response from the articles out of the press conference video, so you can't look it up to second guess tone or intonation! Do you mean the press conference Genie gave after her semi-final victory? It's actually available in full on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9WHD2oQjrs&list=PL50_BURKoimrP0meMolODaYXLBuvkrjGX) but she's not quizzed about Laura. I think it must have been a pre-final press conference. I don't know if there's a video of it available, and besides, intonation can always be misinterpreted. Laura initially declined to comment on Genie's words though when the subject arose again in the commentary box she was correct to say that it was absurd that the story was dominating the headlines when Genie's success in reaching the Wimbledon final was the real story. Hopefully, this will spell an end to the matter.

I seem to recall seeing a photo of Laura cheering on Genie in Genie's match vs Petra in Toronto. I hope Genie's success will motivate Laura.

A poignant photo. Laura had just sustained a right wrist injury in practice before her match with Beth Mattek, the start of the injury woes that sent her career into a tailspin. It was the first time I saw her forearm in a cast, a sight that has become all too frequent since. It was nice that she sat with Nathalie Tauziat and Genie's sister to cheer on her best friend, despite the worry of her injury. Things were very different between Laura and Genie then... :sobbing:

For me it is pretty much impossible to choose who will win on Saturday. The only time they have met before was on clay in Toronto last August. Mentally Bouchard is a much stronger player now; she is much more confident and she expects to win. At the same time Petra is playing better now than she was then, and she succeeded 6-3 6-2 on that occasion

Sorry can't seem to get the hang of quotes! In reply to this one:
"Do you mean the press conference Genie gave after her semi-final victory? It's actually available in full on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9WHD2oQjrs&list=PL50_BURKoimrP0meMolODaYXLBuvkrjGX) but she's not quizzed about Laura."

Yes, Sorry should have made clear it was the pre-final press conference where she said it, and it wasn't transcripted as the post match interviews are so there's no full record as it were, just a 2 min edited highlights on Wimbledon's site, but it was picked up by all our press as they tend to leach any gossip off each other like a chain of domino's!

Interesting that it seems it wasn't much to do with Saviano as that seems to have been the logical conclusion all along.

Oh I do love an intrigue!

At the end of the day the important thing is it hasn't affected her role with Saviano or either of their coaching arrangements, and it certainly hasn't affected Bouchard's success. I think both of them are good friends with Saviano's daughter too so they're clearly both being mature about moving on if they can maintain mutual friends and such.

Incidentally I hadn't seen before what the specifics of Laura's wrist injury were, quite heartening if you have a read up on it, apparently it's only a pain related condition, as because the tear is up the joint/ tendon (can't remember the full name now) rather than a normal snap, the joint still works (hence how Laura could continue playing albeit in pain and not know what was wrong). Read a paper by Berger who discovered the injury, and prior to his work apparently this was a phantom pain syndrome with no known cause (as tears don't show on an MRI which is how they diagnose). Anyway long and the short is as it's a pain injury and not a full snap of joint once it heals the wrist should be good as new (it doesn't have any significant recurrence rate) rather than when a snap heals and there is scar tissue and possible change of muscle positions and so on that may necessitate compensation measures and change of stroke execution etc.

Hopefully that all bodes well for a quick resumption of good hitting and getting back into form quicker. Been a horrible year for Laura seeing everyone pass her by so hope she gets back to her best in 2015.

Canadian TV carried the whole pre-final press conference live to air. The transcript is here http://www.asapsports.com/show_interview.php?id=100691. The Canadian rights holder had complete video archives of all Genie's press during the tournament. The exception was the R3 presser and this one where the stream that was posted cuts off right after the question on why she admires Oprah Winfrey.

I'd say her tone was more or less as the Mail described, cold and detached. When she was asked about Laura being at Saviano the day she went to Florida last November, I thought she was cold and maybe even seething.

My view is that what Saviano says publicly tells us "little, if anything" of evidential value about the cause of the rift and does not prove that it was not to do with coaching set-ups.

I think we'll have to wait until Laura sets the record wrong in her autobiography to find out anything of more substance.
Saviano's statement is nuanced isn't it. That statement really only says he considers it a problem between the two girls and that he has to abide by the outcome.

It could also leave a scenario where Laura asked him to coach her, and he told her he was contractually obligated to work exclusively on the road and that she'd have ask Genie. Technically nothing to do with him as its a contractual issue.

Saviano's daughter was in the box during the Wimbledon matches (and with Laura later in the day). Genie had dinner with the Ren sisters before the tournament and played doubles with Heather. All still friendly with Laura. Leads me to believe me what broke their relationship was narrow and related directly to career rather than something that involves a wider circle.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Just to give an overview how it looks these days when it comes to her ranking (Spoiler: Not great.). She'll basically have to start from scratch.

As she has a PR she'll get into the Aussie Open and she's guaranteed a WC for Wimbledon, so the big goals for 2015 will be to get into the main draws of the other 2 slams.

The 3 "/" tournaments are free spots in her ranking, i.e. she hasn't played a tournament that could count towards her ranking, but the zero pointers from Indian Wells to Wimbledon will stay in her ranking until they come off.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

A ranking overview isn't really needed now, as it's evitable she was going to lose points anyway.

I'd prefer her to be hitting a tennis ball pain free(as she would) rather than worry about rankings, as that comes when you start playing tournaments again.
