She will get one if she ask for it. Who else are they going to give it to?

Heather Naomi Jo are Direct Entry

Let's see Katie/Freya possibly

Also, she's a member of the All England Tennis Club, so she will get one if she wants it. But I think Amanda, Katy and Tara should all get one too if she gets one. I think Katie and Freya will get a Qualifying WCs.

At present it does look like it would be a bit of a waste to give her one, and I don't want to see her lose to someone like Rodina on grass again... :sobbing:

First round at Nottingham is against defending champion, Konjuh..

She's basically playing the younger (right handed) and more confident version of herself. Konjuh is playing the semifinals of Bol right now... If she does reach the final...on the plus side, she might be too tired for this match? Konjuh can also become an unforced error machine sometimes.

On the other hand, she obviously likes this court, likes grass and could blow Laura off court...so..

Laura just has to be mentally ready and be determined to be the aggressor as much as she can.

Ana retired in her SF. Whether it was at the shame of losing to Minella or because of a medical condition, I'm not sure. (I dare say I could find out from the tourney thread if I were that bothered.)

Ana really didn't cared.. Alor of errors. But Minella really playing well this week, shades of Kirilenko.

Ana gearing up for Grass her favourite surface.. Unless Ana is injured. She will tear through Laura unfortunately.

Hoping for the best.

I see that Laura is playing doubles with Freya in Nottingham. At this stage I think she should play more doubles because it would mean not only more match practice (especially when she goes out early, which is all the time at the moment) but also help her to regain/improve some skills. It would also be a less pressured environment than the one on one of singles.

Oh even worst match up. I am going to cry if MLDB trash her.
MLDB's game is trying to make you move left and right and hit a winner. Laura's movement urgh

#3,359 ·
I am have mixed feelings about this match. I don't know how I should feel.

I didn't see the whole thing so maybe I got the wrong impression but Laura's body language seemed rather negative I thought. I'm sure this isn't the case but she looked as if she didn't really care. If you can't be a bit excited playing in your home country, on your favourite surface, and against a player whom you have realistic chance of beating, then when can you be?

#3,364 ·
She played really well when she 2-1 up... then she thought the serve of mldb was out, she argued about it and gave her little boost, she played really well to 4-1.... then back to losing body language... I don't know what's wrong... there's something missing... some sort of a spark something like that.

de Brito serving for the match at 6-5, 15-0, Laura played 3 or 4 decent cross courts from wide on the forehand pushing de Brito out wide on the backhand . MLDB obligingly sent the first few back to Laura and then gently placed a winner straight down the line. Where was Laura? Standing in the forehand corner close to the line, no doubt a bit miffed that her opponent had spoiled the fun by not keeping the cross court rally going. An Olympic sprinter couldn't have reached the backhand corner from where Laura was standing. Maybe she was a bit tired by then because even a beginner is taught that having played a shot you recover towards a base that allows you to cover the rest of the court, but she did seem to play where she wanted the ball to be, not where her opponent might put it.

I blame too much practice. In a recent interview Laura said a day consists of warm up, 2 hours hitting, lunch, 2 hours hitting ... (or something similar). From recent videos of practice sessions the hitting does seem to consist of regularly hitting a ball fed back within a couple of yards forehand and backhand side, which doesn't help much when your opponents start mixing it up and playing the ball left, right, left, slice, short, long, etc etc

Yes, from the practice videos I have seen she is hitting the ball well but not moving very much.

There are many tennis drills you can do though to try and recreate dealing with variety or to improve footwork that you can do while hitting balls too...

I wouldn't say it's too much practice for Laura but not the right kind of practice. Of course you can never quite recreate match situations and pressure in practice, so I see what you mean about that. But she should work more on footwork, it should be her main priority, that and her serve.. Although at least as you said in the live thread, her serve is improving and she is serving more aces now.

I was there today. There's really nothing new to tell. This match was pretty much the exact same as every other one of her matches in the past 12 months. Occasional flashes of brilliance but mostly just error after error after error.

The ball striking is there. It's always been there. It never left her. What has left her is her ability to construct a point. She hits two good shots and gets annoyed that she hasn't won the point already, so goes for a little bit more on the third shot and misses by a country mile.

The moment she was on the run the point was over. Instead of trying to get the ball back in play, she would opt for some insane 0% shot that she expects to be a winner. Michelle did a good job of moving her from side to side and it ultimately won her the match.

Oh well, hopefully doubles will be a different story. Going well so far.

It's like all the problems that she was finally starting to deal with in 2013 have come back with a vengeance and are ten times worse- the double faults at crucial moments, the poor movement, high unforced error count, poor points construction...

Wrist injuries suck.... Although Del Potro beat Dimitrov today, and seems to be slowly making his way back...so maybe there is hope?

I only saw a bit of the doubles match too. It was close (which in itself is a result given the quality of the opposition). From what I saw though Freya was the better of the two. At least Laura looked positive and engaged (perhaps helped by having a partner on court and one with whom she looked to have an excellent rapport).

Does anyone know if Laura is playing anywhere before Wimbledon?

Thanks for the readout of the singles match Dawson.

She's used her SR to enter Birmingham qualifying. She will probably get a WC into Eastbourne too if she wants it.

Freya basically carried the match. :sobbing: Laura was good at points but she made a lot of silly mistakes including one very costly one at the tiebreak when she crossed over Freya at the net and hit her volley out. Freya looks like she will be a very good doubles player though.

There was also a point near the end where Laura and Kristina were trading groundstrokes, with neither willing to actually do anything with the ball.. Eventually Laura hit the ball into the net... Her reaction time and court positioning also wasn't great...

Pliskova didn't cared much at all ,shame .

#3,371 ·
I hope she plays with Freya again. Who knows, it might help her game.

Freya has been off my radar but I shall definitely be rooting for her from now on. I see she has just won two consecutive ITF doubles titles, so clearly she has talent there as Mr Sparkle says. From the little I saw of the match she had a good attitude too. She didn't fold in rallies despite the heavy hitting of the Pliskovas.

Thanks for the info Mr Sparkle. I had lost track.

When Del Potro plays, he is nearly always competitive at a high level, it's just that his injury resurfaces, and he needs more time off.

Quite unlike Laura, who can't seem to remember how to play a tennis match. I hoped maybe the home crowd would inspire her.

#3,375 ·
I don't think Freya want to play with Laura after today... can't blame her.

She was suppose to carry the team.

Also Dimitrov lost concentration today after they played his ex girlfriends song on the change over and he lost 7 games in a row

I am going to Birmingham for qualies. I am just going to shout move your feets every game.

"I could really do with some wins and that would definitely help my confidence, but it's not technique that's stopping anything, it's more just match rhythm and getting used to momentum shifts, not letting them last too long – that's what happened today," she said.

Laura I am not sure that is 100% accurate, maybe work on that too if you can.

Yes, I thought the same.
