Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Where does it say in that article that Max said Nick was her coach? I wanna see a quote  For all we know he could have said as part of a coaching team, that's not the same thing. The newspapers could well have turned that into coach. From everything I've seen I think Nick will be more of a consultancy role for Laura and she will be based at his academy with Witten as her hitting partner and trying to implement Nick's guidance. If Nick is travelling to the slams with Genie he's Genie's coach. Just feel Laura's let herself take second best here.

It's said that it's confirmed by Max that she's working with Saviano. Therefore the info he given them would have maybe inspired the article. That's why I also said, they could have over-exaggerated on what Max actually said by "working together" but it's weird that they said "coach" wouldn't Max have told them that it was a consultancy role if that's what it is? That's nothing to hide.

The info the media has is that's it's a "coaching" role. Which is weird from Genie's comments as she's sure Saviano is her full time coach.

I personally think it's a consultancy role, Eisenbud's words seem to have been twisted slightly. I do think Laura's playing second best here. She could just have Sven or someone else in a consultancy role not Genie's full time coach.

Hmmmm, seems more likely that Genie's expressed it wrong than Max, but you never know.

edit: after seeing Play_Suspended's comment, entirely likely that the website has twisted what Max has told them.

Cronin says that Laura will only work with Nick at his academy, so technically he is her coach, just not when they're on the road. So yeah, consultant does appear to be a more suitable term.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Listen to Genie herself say it. She's quite bubbly when she talks to the media but she's all business when asked about the coaching situation at around 4:30 of the interview.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Oh wow Cronin: 'reason Robson went with Saviano/Witten is cause she couldn't reach coaching deal with Mark Woodforde. May still hire another coach in '14'. Woodforde would be interesting.....wonder why they couldnt reach a deal.

Good thing is that this won't be permanent, but that's another off season without a long term coach.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

I suppose this temporary arrangement is better than her rushing into finding a coach and firing him six months down the line. Feels a bit strange though, a bit like she's now living him the shadow of Genie after being the front runner for so many years.

Australia will be interesting. A devilish part of me is hoping for a Robson v Bouchard first round in Melbourne :oh:

Robson hires Witten as traveling coach, Saviano as coaching consultant http://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2013/11/robson-hires-witten-and-saviano-coaches/49827/#.Uo0lM3m-3Xt

Great Britain’s Laura Robson has decided to hire American Jesse Witten as her traveling coach and hitting partner, and employ Nick Saviano as a coaching consultant.

TENNIS.com has learned that Robson tried to hire Australian coach Mark Woodforde to coach her, but the two couldn't come to terms financially, as he apparently asked for too much money.

The 19-year-old Robson may look to hire another coach in the future but will stay with this arrangement through at least the 2014 Australian Open. Even if she does add another coach, he or she will still consult with Saviano.

TENNIS.com has also learned that Robson has hired fitness trainer Mark Wellington to travel with her full time. Wellington has previously worked with Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka.

Let's take the positive here, Mark Wellington is a good move. If he can get Laura's footwork anything like Vika's or Maria's that would make a massive difference. Let's hope he's Laura s jez green. Get her movement good and her shots will be much more consistent, so many shots are missed due to being out of position. Forget the technical or tactical advice a good fitness trainer could transform her.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Been taking in the weird Saviano news all day and have only just hit upon what I think is the most interesting bit of all of it... Read between the lines here, she was trying to hire Mark Woodforde who has had no involvement with womens tennis other than fedcup coaching in 2003 as far as I can find, and doesn't seem to be doing anything at present, yet was too expensive. That tells me straight away she was going for a left-field choice, and had absolutely no intention of a major league hire. If Mark Woodforde is too expensive then surely there's no way she was even seriously considering Hogstedt or Joyce or Groeneveld, who all have much more recent proven pedigree, and would surely be much more expensive.

Now I can fully see why many think she's a bit immature in terms of wanting to take in the world chill and enjoy life with tennis not being the be-all end-all, and that may change it may not (Wozniacki shows no signs of changing soon preferring to be under the spell of lurve!), but the one thing I would never question is Robson's tennis intelligence. I've got a feeling as someone else suggested, that the most important and relevant move she's made has nothing to do with the coach or consultant, its the hiring of a bloody good fitness trainer, which went completely under the radar until someone pointed it out much later on.

What's her biggest weakness according to every commentator... movement and positioning.. One of her earliest coaches (Alan Jones) said not long ago her movement in relation to the oncoming ball is the least improved thing over the last 5 years and is holding her back. A good hitting partner and a good fitness trainer is the only thing that will really sort that out, and it is pretty much the case at the moment the only useful thing a coach can tell her is what she really struggles with, which every Sky, BT Sport, BBC and Eurosport commentator has been telling her without any charge for a couple of years now. Maybe she really struggles with it, maybe she hasn't put in enough work in the past, but a bit of a maverick she knows quite well started surrounding himself with specialists a few years back to sort out his weedy physique and stamina issues, and that didn't work out so badly...

Give it time....
If its any consolation a little bit of gossip on Cronin's twitter was very praising of Witten. Good tennis intelligence and a good hitting partner. Two things that wouldn't go amiss. And he's only just retired so he's got a full career of experience to share on winning ugly, and he's still quite fit!
See how it goes!

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Not sure this arrangement is a good idea for Laura and Genie's friendship.
Honestly, this is a non-issue. Friends come and go but tennis careers are over before you know it and if this arrangement benefits Laura it will have been the right decision even if there is some friction between the two. Also I don't agree with this notion that Laura doesn't have the 'killer instinct' and puts things like personal relationships ahead of tennis. Her coaching history as well as firing the agent she's had since age 13 just before the US Open really proves that she is prepared to make tough decisions, where people could end up getting hurt, if she believes it will help her career.

Regarding the set-up, I think it's a good temporary solution, she will be training in Florida and not in London which will keep her focused on training and away from the London party scene.

It kinda odd Maria would Hire Sven I thought Laura would pick him as her coach, but I kinda don't think Maria & Sven won't last long IMO

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

On the one hand its a good thing she's committed to her fitness regimen. But some of the other stuff is sending some confusing signals. She's back hitting balls but at the NTC and not in Florida. The guy who was to travel with her is apparently out of retirement as a player and asking for WCs to Challenger tournaments in South America.

Have we already seen the end of another coaching regime?

Considering her track record , it will be normal operating procedure.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

At least if she gets fir for January 2015 Laura won't have any points to defend.

That should help her get back into the top 100 next season.
What do you want her to do? Play if she isn't ready? She played the the entire Asian swing last year with the wrist sill troubling her and suffered for it. She only started hitting a few weeks ago again, I'm sure she wants to be sure everything will be okay.

It's clear you want her to force herself to be back on court. Not only is that not wise, it could be career threatening.

PS - try being a Jamie Hampton fan. It's much worse.

Have we already seen the end of another coaching regime?
Jesse is her hitting partner not coach. This wasn't really the set up she wanted anyway, she approached Aussie coach (?) but didn't come to an agreement.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Laura is on her way to America. I hope it's a good sign. She might go training to Nick Saviano Academy in Florida before Miami. Hope I'm not too optimistic

She's in IW doing the dog and pony show for all her clothing and equipment sponsors. Maybe she'll head to Florida after fulfilling her contractual obligations.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Laura is in Florida, training at IMG Academy.
Why she didn't go to the Saviano Academy? With Witten playing qualies at IW, I'm really scared :scared:
She's an IMG client, she has access to their academy/facilities. The Saviano academy was just an off season thing, during training blocks she should be at IMG.

She may meet up with Witten soon... she's still on the entry list for Miami so we'll see then.
