Thumbs up Tournament PREDICTIONS and POSSIBILITIES

The seeds (I'll update this when I see the draw):

01. Serena Williams: The obvious favorite. Nobody here gives her particular trouble.

02. Venus Williams: An early upset in the making? She will be rusty for sure, and it's not like she can "play her way" into the tournament before facing a top player....everyone here (except for one) is a TOP player.

03. Jennifer Capriati: Round one or quarterfinal loss 99% assured.

04. Justine Henin: Has been looking better recently. Should manage round one, possibly through to semis, or if draw opens up, finals.

05. Kim Clijsters: Have to like her chances. She has to be favored against the top four unless she meets Serena, who she gave a first-set drubbing to in their last encounter. Recently play is encouraging.

06. Monica Seles: Early round upset. Rusty, and let's face it, she's getting up there.

07. Daniela Hantuchova: Could make waves considering recent play. Still hasn't shown she can beat a Williams sister.

08. Jelena Dokic: First round loss.

09. Lindsay Davenport: Is she still playing? If not injured, expect her to win her first round if she meets Seles, Dani, or Jelena (and the probability of her playing Jelena first is highest).

10. Anastasia Myskina: The lurking dark horse. She has beaten all of the #5-8 seeds sometime this year except Seles, who she could beat now anyway.

11. Patty Schnyder: Not a fun match-up, considering that she too is playing better than the #6-8 seeds. Upset specialist.

12. Chanda Rubin: Inconsistent, but if she makes it past round one, has shown the ability to beat the elite. If she wins the first one, she gets far.

13. Silvia Farina Elia: Useless. Useless, crappy player, who had a few nice wins years ago to get a decent ranking, and has racked up something like 30 Tier III quarterfinals a year to manage the ranking. The top four seeds are all praying to meet her first round and not the next three.

14. Maggie Maleeva: This is on carpet, right? Watch out...

15. Anna Smashnova: Whether she wins basically depends on the play of her opponent, so if any of the top four are rusty in their first round, she is not the ideal opponent for them. I'd give her a 25% chance at an early upset.

16. Elena Dementieva: Who knows? Has the speed and power to handle the top four, but 'consistence' is a foreign word to her.

First round match-ups:

1-4 vs. 13-16

No one wants to meet Maleeva. All are hoping to meet Farina Elia. If rusty, the top four would want to play Dementieva as opposed to Smashnova.

5-8 vs. 9-12

Clijsters the only sure bet. Davenport, Rubin, Myskina, Schnyder could upset any of them, and Dokic and Seles are almost sure 1st round losers.

Early losers (top 8): Venus, Capriati, Dokic, Seles.

Favorites: Serena, Clijsters, Henin

Winner: Serena over a Belgian

Thoughts, si vous plait...

Your biased against Monica is amazing.

The top 8, less whoever plays Lindsay in R1 will move on.
Although the difference between Top 10 and Top 20 is smaller than years past, some of the ones outside the Top 20 will be outclassed.

Biased against Monica? No. When was the last tournament she played? What have some of her recent results been? Not good, not good at all. Let's face it: Would you favor her in a match against Myskina, Schnyder, Rubin, or Davenport if they were to play right now? Probably not. What I have against Monica and Silvia is that Monica is not playing good enough to beat these girls, and that Silvia has never played good enough to beat these girls.

Anyway, I have been informed that the last eight are unseeded, so the top seed could theoretically meet Lindsay Davenport, which changes a LOT of what I said.

Regardless, there is little doubt that the top eight would choose to meet Farina Elia could they have a choice, and the last eight would choose to meet Seles/Dokic first round if they had a choice.

It is your opinion, but if Venus loses to someone is Serena in finals.

VENUS WILLIAMS
SERENA WILLIAMS
PAULA ORMAECHEA

Monica would wipe the floor with all but Davenport

She's had 3 weeks to prepare, she'll be ready

Silvia Farina Elia isnt so 'useless' or she would'nt have gotten to 11 in the world.

It seems to me every time i turn around people are always saying that Monica's gonna lose first round, the new girls will beat her blah blah blah, but it never happens.

If she plays Miskina 6-3 6-2 if she plays Schnyder 6-2 6-1 if she plays Chanda 6-3 6-2 if she plays Elia 6-1 6-1

Monica will get to the SF provided she stays away from the WIlliams' and Davy nuff said

oh and by the way, both Monica and Elia are eons better than you could ever could dream to be so just be quiet

o0O0o, venus played her first round match against maleeva in moscow, she hadnt played since the us open, but still she was good enough to take her to 3 sets including a tiebreak in the third set...may i remind you that maleeva won that tournament beating 2 other top ten players who are good on indoor surfaces with similar scorelines and kim and davenport had more preparation than venus did...

Maleeva beat Amelie and Lindsay, not Kim and Lindsay

I agree with most of it o0O0o, except for monica...she can do some damage...and Venus won't be upset I'm afraid

Don't be so sure of Jelena... just because she plays "boring tennis" doesn't mean she'll lose just so she won't take up airtime. So long as she doesn't draw Davenport, she has a very decent chance of winning.

VENUS
Serena
Lindsay Jelena Maria

Mary : Monica : Svetlana : Sania : Jennifer : Amelie
Roddick : Grosjean : David : Djokovic

I agree with your whole synopsis, OooooOO. Did I leave out an "O"? Anyhoo, Monica is not known to return from long layoffs strong so I'm not looking for her to make any ways. Jen is..... Well, you know. Venus is questionable due to lack of play and dismal last performance. Lindsay hasn't shown that she can finish a tourney holding the trophy since her return. I think your predictions are right on the money.

Good point, Oliver. I never thought of that and that counts for a lot. Let's hope Venus is home practicing her heart out so she can end the year strongly.

For the sake of being called a male pig, I won't describe just why virtually any women's professional would not be able to beat a top-ranked high school senior.

Umm, does anyone remember in 95 when she won the first tourny she entered without dropping a set and got to the final of the UsOPen? And last year when she beat Hingis, Capriati, and Serena after a 5 month layoff? Get your facts straight.

Oh and oOoOO or whatever, you would get clocked by any of the top 5 and you know it. You might be able to out hit them, but talent wise, your waaaaaaaay behind

I just love how you count out Venus. When she makes it to the final and possibly wins the trophy then folks will look pretty stupid. BTW I like Maggie, but if she meets Kim Clijsters in the first round, expect an azz waxing from Kim.
