The Anna Smashnova Cheering Thread

ok, i seem to be starting a trend here - doing this after her first match. well, at least it's a good sign

anna did a great job beating meghann, a player who has good power and a game well designed to indoors. im really impressed with that actually! next will be against either elena or ai, who are two fickle opponents. theoretically, dementieva should win that match although her mental game is so weak that who knows what could happen. sugiyama has little power so that even if she wins, anna would have a fun match against her. anna actually has a huge chance at making it to the quarterfinals. once there, she would most likely face daniela hantuchova - a player who anna has beaten in the past. surprisingly, daniela does not seem to cope well indoors, even though her game is suited to it, and has great difficulty changing surfaces. this could prove to be good for anna.

the big news is in the chase. right now, anna is qualifying. the win over meghann really helps her out. maleeva and dementieva are the two directly below her. maleeva is at an immediate disadvantage b/c she is playing luxembourg, however, she is the number 2 seed and has little chance of being eliminated. what it will most likely come down to is that whoever wins the dementieva vs. anna match WILL qualify for the champs. the loser will depend on maleeva's results. that match is vital for anna.

14 Schnyder - 1586 QUALIFIED
15 Rubin - 1527
16 Smashnova - 1478
17 Maleeva - 1416
18 Dementieva - 1411

dechy, sugiyama, and coetzer have an outside shot, but they would probably have to win their respective tournaments (easier for dechy and coetzer) and have dementieva and maleeva lose very early for them to have a prayer at it.

GOOD LUCK ANNA! WE HOPE TO WILL SEE YOU IN LA!

Lindsay Davenport - Anna Smashnova - Lisa Raymond - Sandrine Testud - Paola Suarez - Amelie Mauresmo - Virginia Ruano-Pascual - Nadia Petrova - Chanda Rubin - Cara Black - Tathiana Garbin - Anne Kremer - Monica Seles - Fabiola Zuluaga - Maria Sanchez-Lorenzo - Amanda Coetzer - Rita Grande - Meghann Shaughnessy - Magui Serna - Nathalie Dechy - Kim Clijsters - Elena Tatarkova - Maria Sharapova - Alicia Molik - Julia Vakulenko - Elena Likhovtseva - Anastasia Myskina - Emilie Loit

Hopefully Anna can pull it off, but Elena did beat her easily a couple of weeks ago.

ok, HUGE news:

mauresmo has withdrawn from la. and as much as that upsets me it opens up a whole new light. w/ that in mind, let's look at the standings:

15 CHANDA RUBIN 1527.00 12
16 ANNA SMASHNOVA 1478.00 27
17 MAGDALENA MALEEVA 1416.00 23
18 ELENA DEMENTIEVA 1411.00 24
19 NATHALIE DECHY 1325.00 23
20 AI SUGIYAMA 1242.00 26
21 AMANDA COETZER 1204.00 21

all of these players are still alive in their respective tournaments. HOWEVER, amelie and hingis's withdrawls have opened up TWO extra spots - meaning the top EIGHTEEN will enter into LA. for dechy, sugiyama, or coetzer to pass anna now is virtually impossible unless they win their respective tournaments and get the most points possible by doing it. should any THREE of the people below her lose relatively early, anna is absolutely in. coetzer has virtually no chance to pass. anna's about 300 points ahead (w/ points from linz) and its very unlikely. dechy is the only one w/ a realistic chance of that happening. maleeva is good indoors, but peaked early in moscow and hasn't done much since. we shall see, but it looks like the chances of her qualifying just keep getting better

GO ANNA - KEEP THE LA MOTIVE GOING

Lindsay Davenport - Anna Smashnova - Lisa Raymond - Sandrine Testud - Paola Suarez - Amelie Mauresmo - Virginia Ruano-Pascual - Nadia Petrova - Chanda Rubin - Cara Black - Tathiana Garbin - Anne Kremer - Monica Seles - Fabiola Zuluaga - Maria Sanchez-Lorenzo - Amanda Coetzer - Rita Grande - Meghann Shaughnessy - Magui Serna - Nathalie Dechy - Kim Clijsters - Elena Tatarkova - Maria Sharapova - Alicia Molik - Julia Vakulenko - Elena Likhovtseva - Anastasia Myskina - Emilie Loit

it's funny - it's almost like she knew what was at stake w/ this match. not that i don't believe she can't beat dementieva, but 2 indoors wins over 2 good indoor players is just amazing im so excited

i think that it's official that anna has qualified for LA sugiyama went out round 1 and dementieva and dechy lost in their respective tournaments (poor nathalie ).

so it's official even if coetzer and maleeva win the tournaments (which they can't b/c they're playing the same place) anna would still be at least in the 18th position, leaving her to qualify

CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT VICTORY AND WAY TO QUALIFY FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIPS - AFTER SUCH A YEAR, YOU DESERVE IT
