US Open Wildcards Speculation/News (Update 8/11)

Confirmed US Open Wild Cards (As of 7/30/2013)

1. Nicole Gibbs (USA) - NCAA Champ
2. Shelby Rogers (USA) - USTA Pro Circuit Wild Card Recipient
3. French Wild Card Recipient (FRA)
4. Australian Wild Card Recipient (AUS)
5. Sachia Vickery (USA) - USTA 18s Champ
6. TBA
7. TBA
8. TBA

---------------

Figured I would get this thread rolling, because I'm curious to see what others think. The USTA is in a very tough position this year because there are a lot of girls close to the cutoff, as well as a lot of promising junior players. It's a good, but frustrating problem to have. The depth of American women right now means these wildcards won't merely be throwaways. I really believe every girl given a wildcard here will have a solid chance to win a match. So without further ado, let's discuss.

As the ranking list stands now, here are my picks:

1. Aussie reciprocal wildcard (Casey Dellacqua?)
2. French reciprocal wildcard (Virginie Razzano?)
3. USTA 18s Champ
4. Nicole Gibbs (2013 NCAA singles champ)
5. USTA Pro Circuit WC Playoff winner (Currently Gibbs is in the lead, but Alison Riske or Shelby Rogers will most likely overtake her this week).
6. Alison Riske (Next into MD and USTA has given the next in a MDWC three out of the last four years. Plus coming off a Wimbledon R3)
7. Samantha Crawford (Qualified last year, is the reigning US Open Girls Champ)
8. Taylor Townsend (USTA needs to save face after last year's scandal. Besides, Taylor is playing well, coming off a Junior Wimbledon final)

I'm really hoping Alison gets in directly to free up another WC spot, which in turn would most likely free up a QWC spot

QWCs

1. Coco Vandeweghe (USTA favorite)
2. Sachia Vickery (Rising junior sitting at a CHR of 240 at the moment).
3. Louisa Chirico (Playing fantastic junior tennis at the moment. Semis of RG and Wimbledon)
4. Jamie Loeb (Another player playing good junior tennis right now)
5. Victoria Duval (Has had solid results this year. Last year's 18s champ. Still young)
6. Julia Boserup (Coming back from injury. Brings her A game to a big stage).
7. USTA National Playoff Winner
8. NCAA player (Lauren Embree? NCAA runner up Mary Weatherholt? Kristie Ahn or Krista Hardebeck? Brianna Morgan?)

Serena Williams ~ Maria Sharapova ~ Venus Williams ~ Jelena Dokic ~ Melanie Oudin ~ Christina McHale

Vandeweghe ~ Mattek-Sands ~ King ~ Hampton ~ Riske ~ Glatch ~ Brengle ~ Rogers ~ Stephens ~ Boserup ~ Davis ~ Keys ~ Lepchenko ~ Falconi ~ Chirico ~ Crawford ~ Gibbs ~ Pegula ~ Min ~ Townsend ~ Duval ~ Vickery ~ Bellis ~ Ahn

Re: US Open Wildcard Speculation

Riske will get in.
I think you're forgetting Sanchez and King they are only just out of MD if they can't get in direct they will get WCs.

Re: US Open Wildcard Speculation

Agree this will be a very tough year for the USTA. They really only have 3 MD WCs (possibly a 4th if they allow Gibbs to win the WC playoff) and 6 QD WCs at their discretion. Considering some of their WCs in recent years (Craybas? Cohen?), it's really hard to speculate as to what they're thinking sometimes, but here's my guess:

MD WC -
Riske
Sanchez
Oudin
(NCAA Winner) Gibbs
(WCP Winner) TBD
(18s Winner) TBD
(French)
(Aussie)

QD WCs-
Vickery
Vandeweghe
Crawford
Townsend
Duval
Embree
(18s RU) TBD
(USNP Winner) TBD

If Vickery/Crawford/Duval make the 18s final, that could free up one or more QD WCs, which I think would also go to junior players (e.g. Kiick, Chirico, Loeb).

Re: US Open Wildcard Speculation

Brianna Morgan absolutely deserves a QWC after the summer that she's had. Whether she actually gets one will be another question all together...

Re: US Open Wildcard Speculation

My guesses:

Main draw:

1 French - Razzano or maybe Alize Lim deserves it for her improvement

2 Australia - hopefully not Ashleigh Barty again (becoming a doubles specialist already?), Casey Dellacqua is highest ranked, Storm Sanders is greatly improved but is she injured?

3 NCAA champion - Nicole Gibbs

4 Nat 18s champ - Samantha Crawford, Victoria Duval, Taylor Townsend, Brooke Austin, Jan Abaza, Louisa Chirico, Jamie Loeb, Sachia Vickery, Alexandra Kiick amongst the entries

5 USTA Pro Circuit winner - Shelby Rogers? Alison Riske? Grace Min?

6, 7, 8 - 3 from Maria Sanchez, Vania King, Jessica Pegula (injured?), Rogers, Min, Riske, Crawford

Players likely to be in qualies without wild card:

Melanie Oudin - got one last year, has dropped in rankings
Irina Falconi
Alexa Glatch
Coco Vandeweghe - rankings slump
Madison Brengle
Julia Cohen (may sneak in)
Chiara Scholl (may sneak in)

QWCs
Players like Crawford, Kiick, Duval, Townsend, Chirico, Vickery etc who do not get Nat 18s WC
Connie Chieh-Yu Hsu, Allie Will, Sanaz Marand?

Australia's will be Barty or Sanders. I'd love Sanders to get it but feel they'll pick Barty.

Re: US Open Wildcard Speculation

You guys are spot on, really tough this year.
I'd say
Gibbs
Min until today's loss
18 champ
Aussie: hope Saunders
French : hope Lim but probably Razzano
Then probably Riske if not de
Challenger winner : probably Rogers
Then you have a heap of players born between 89-94 that will be hard to separate
King- never a USTA fav or liked by Fernandez, I'd say no chance unless she has a good week over the next month
Oudin- total opposite to king, big favourite and former Quarterfinalist
Glatch- currently injured, ran out of favours?
Maria Sanchez - again, potentially injured, bad month may be a turn off but a Chris Evert fav
Pegula- seems like an outsider, maybe due to family wealth. Also hasn't played , injured ? Doubt she will get one
Falconi- like Oudin, not great year but USTA fav
Vanderweigh- until this week would have needed a qd wc. Another fav and if she does ok over the next month could get one
Cohen- had no chance and after Baku will have to beg for qdwc
Brengle- like Glatch out of favours
Scholl-overlooked when she had better years, struggle to get a qd wc
Then come the juniors, all of whom I think will get qdqcs (Crawford already does)
Townsend, Duval, Vickery, kiick.
Although she is older than this group, I hope Hsu gets one, she is doing a Cohen and playing anywhere each week

Storm Sanders says she is in qualifying. Pretty much book Barty in for Australian wildcard. Rodionova and Dellacqua won't get it and no one else is close to Barty in terms of getting a deserving WC.

Re: US Open Wildcard Speculation

Razzano probably has the French one after that Kuznetsova win.
Australian WC is certainly Barty's if she wants it. Although I don't think she particularly deserves it and I think qualifying will do her good.

Re: US Open Wildcard Speculation

According to her Facebook, it looks like Shelby Rogers is on her way to the US Open. I assume that means she earned her main draw wildcard as a result of her win in Lexington.
