We'll see. I'm a huge Mel supporter, always have been, but when there are so many talented girls out there, these wildcards must be earned. If Mel can bring it on the hardcourt swing this summer, I say absolutely give it to her. She needs to prove that she deserves it, because on the year as a whole, some girls have been better than she has.

Serena Williams ~ Maria Sharapova ~ Venus Williams ~ Jelena Dokic ~ Melanie Oudin ~ Christina McHale

Re: US Open Wildcards Speculation/News

Hope they give a QWC to Louisa Chirico. She's had back-to-back SF at junior slams, so I think she deserves a shot

* Ivanovic * Watson * BMS * Gavrilova * Voskoboeva * Robson * Kvitova * Mladenovic * Lisicki * FutureGoat Konjuh

Elena Baltacha. Never forgotten.

No way unless she has become American. The US Open only gives out wild cards to foreign players if they are Australian or French (the corrupt arrangement called the 'wild card swap'). They even stopped doling them out to the NCAA champion for a few years when a foreign player won that championship a few times.

That would be a big shame. Barty won a grand total of two games in Wimbledon qualifying and has not played a single match in the US Open series or the USTA ITFs and somehow she is deserving of a wild card.

Here's hoping Barty does NOT get a WC. Never before have I ever seen someone get so many undeserving free passes. Not right.

It's pretty clear the girl has talent, but right now she needs to stick where she belongs.

I'm sure I'll get the usuall "well, who else deserves it?" defense. But why should someone repeatedly strike gold because everyone else sucks? In all honesty, no one deserves it. They need to scrap this farcical arrangement, because Australia has zero depth and for years has always relied on one player to carry the WC load. It's a joke.

Yes, I agree WC should be earned but after you give one to Riske , the last two are more about "personal choice" than "earned" or "deserved"

Hopefully Riske gets in and MDWC goes to Vania (as next-in American).

If any veteran American (Coco, Melanie, etc.) has a run this summer, one of the WCs will go to them. Then there's one open. I'd like to see Townsend get it. It's about time she gets respected. Her body doesn't show it but her results do.

Yeah but for example in 2009 MLB had a WC in Wimbledon. And she is a little american, she had very WC in Premiers in USA (...) I think that isn´t impossible

Wimbledon is a totally different ball game. They will give WCs to any Brit ranked 250+ (usually). The rest are up for grabs and are given out at the discretion of the LTA. So since MLDB was having a breakout season at that point, being a teen breaking into the top 100 and reaching R3 of RG, a WC was only natural given the way the LTA operates.

The USTA will not give a MDWC to a non-American with the exception of an Aussie and French player due to the WC trade agreement. They just won't do it. It is an opportunity to showcase new American talent. The reason why MLDB has gotten WC's into Premiers in the States (mainly I am thinking of Miami) is because that tournament is owned by IMG, not the USTA. Michelle used to train at IMG Academies in Bradenton, so it's not a shocker she got WCs into that event.

Storm Sanders is far more deserving at the moment - she's zoomed up the rankings from 721 to 223 this year, she just reached the sf at $50k Yakima beating US wild card recipient Shelby Rogers en route and she even got to the sf of a European clay ITF at Lenzerheide $25k, which is pretty amazing for an Australian player. If it wasn't for her win over Hradecka 1r Roland Garros, Barty would have dropped in the rankings this year....

Coco is slightly ahead of Melanie on that front, some good wins in last week or two. I think Townsend's drubbing by Niculescu must count against her - there are too many players ahead of her in rankings and experience at this point, I would give her a QWC.
