Safdar is not 16. She is a sophomore at Syracuse. I think she just turned 20.

Frilling was a top college player at Notre Dame and had fantastic doubles results as a junior player. Shocked to see her lose against Robinson

Ah, well that explains the maturity in Safdar's game, then. I thought I understood Vargas' father say she was 16, but I misunderstood. She's one of Luke Jensen's, then. He told us he was there because some of his players were in the tournament.

I saw Frilling a couple of years ago in a doubles match at the Indian Harbour Beach 50K and remember her playing pretty well in that. My impression from the IHB events has always been that she was more of a doubles specialist--this was the first time I had really taken note of her in a singles match.

It was a fairly tight match for the first set and change which I saw. Both she and Alexis were struggling some with the wind, which was starting to kick up a bit by that time. Neither player got a lot of momentum or jumped out to a big lead--it was tight, like 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 3-3, 4-3, 4-4, and Alexis finally got a break and won the first set 6-4. The players' games and the match games were just about even, from what I could tell. Some nice winners from both players, which is the kind of tennis I enjoy watching, so that was fun. After the first set, I turned around to watch some of Asia Muhammad's match, and when that one was over, I looked back around and Alexis had won the second set pretty quickly, so I'm guessing that Gabby started missing a bit more and Alexis started finding her range a little more in that second set.

That's nice to read! Gabby has mostly played USTA tournaments so this is a step up for her.

Expected Ulrikke Bit sad to give up a 1-set lead to a 14?-year-old girl though.

What's the deal with Shishkina? She's been extremely hyped up in a couple of articles, yet I can't understand her supposed lack of funding with Kazakhztan having so much funding available, even to buy players out.
