If player is out with a long term injury (at least eight weeks) and already has three zeroes, then only mandatory tournaments (GS, PM and YEC) give additional zeroes.
If mandatory tournaments are included in the maximum of three 0 points for missed tournaments, then I am able to follow Serena Williams’ mandatory seven 0 pointers for 2011 (GS Australian Open, GS French Open, PM Indian Wells, PM Miami, PM Madrid, P5 Tokyo & PM Beijing), which is in line with NA-MUG
However, I don’t spot Kim Clijsters’ six 0 pointers for 2011 as she didn’t play P5 Dubai and withdraw from eight tournaments for various reasons [PM Madrid & P5 Rome (both right shoulder & wrist injury), GS Wimbledon & P700 Carlsbad (both right ankle injury), P5 Cincinnati & US Open (both left abdominal injury) and P5 Tokyo & PM Beijing (both abdominal muscle injury)]. The key might be that WTA values Kim’s absence from P5 Cincinnati until season end as one long term injury (with two different causes) and P5 Cincinnati, US Open & PM Beijing are these maximum three for the long term injury (contrary to NA-MUG
who found out that WTA included P5 Tokyo).
- GSs Wimbledon & US Open and PMs Madrid & Beijing are four out of six zero pointer. Which ones are the other two (why only two?)?
- As Kim played only P5 Toronto, please direct me to the other three P5 commitments.
- As Kim didn’t include any of her two P700 tournaments in her results (she withdraw from P700 Carlsbad due to right ankle injury) please direct me to the other.
As you have to split up Venus Williams’ long term injuries in 2011 in (at least) three long term injuries I also don’t find her seven mandatory 0 points, but don’t go into details here.
If a Top 10 player may only incur a maximum of three 0 points for missed tournaments due to injury or illness for at least eight consecutive weeks during the tour year (= long term injury) and this includes missed Mandatory tournaments
then Andrea Petkovic should ony receive three mandatory 0 ranking points for missing GS Australian Open, PMs Indian Wells & Miami (I assume she will withdraw from the last two but read here
that she likes to play in IW). I am looking forward to see the outcome.
From WTA 2011 Official Rulebook (p 212) or WTA 2012 Official Rulebook (p 228):
(c) Top 10 Players may only incur a maximum of three (3) zero (0) points for Missed Tournaments due to a Long Term Injury; however, all zero (0) points for missed Mandatory Tournaments (i.e., Premier Mandatory Tournaments, Grand Slams and the Premier WTA Championships) must count on the player’s ranking. If there are less than three (3) Mandatory Tournament zero (0) point penalties during such absence, the priority order in counting the zero (0) point penalties shall be based on the highest Tournament Category Level of Missed Tournament first, and then to the first event missed during the Long Term Injury.
