Jie is also in doubles final . So she can leave the singles title to Tian Tian .

Steve, you've seen all four of the Chinese talents play before right? Nan Nan, Jie, Tian Tian, and Zi......right now Jie is producing better results than the rest....but in your opinion can you rank the four from descending order of who you think have the most potential?

No .

1) I have seen them play only in one tournament.

2) Zi is still extremely young and can change within the coming two years or so.

3) Nan Nan seems to be going through a period of doubt and her current results (including in Vietnam) do not reflect her full potential. Whether she'll be able to overcome these doubts and come back in the game, I don't know.

This being said, two players mostly impressed me during the Hochiminh City tournament :

- Tian Tian who really dominated all her opponents (incl. Jie ). She has an all-round game and should be able to obtain good results on any surface, from clay to grass. She did not commit many unforced errors (except in the two sets she lost due to some lack of concentration), she has a good serve. She has a good presence at the net and likes to finish the points off there.

In her 1/2 final against Jie, she had no problem imposing herself. Unless her game has drastically improved in the past month, I don't see Jie being able to win this final against Tian Tian.

However, in the past few weeks, her clay results have been disappointing .

- Zi : she has been a bit nervous at the beginning of her matches, but she has a huge potential IMO, if she can gain some confidence. She looks very thin (the Su-Wei type ), but she has blasting shots from the back of the court and she hides the direction very well. Besides, she is a good doubles player and could finish the points at the net more often (her volley is better than Jie who has a some weaknesses at the net). For the time being, she however does not do it.

She needs however to gain some confidence, which Jie is not lacking (eg : her come-back against Napaporn at Hochiminh City).

Jie has been a solid player during the Hochiminh City tourney with some very good shots. I don't know if she'll be able to overcome her present weaknesses. She is however working on it very hard. So...

As for Nan Nan, she has everything to succeed, but seems to be going through a bad period of time (though her results are quite OK. But I have high expectations for her , and they don't seem to materialise). I was in particular very disappointed to see that she let the match go after losing the first set against Mi-Ra. Her physical condition seems to be average and she needs to improve her stamina. She is working on it, but could do more.

Does this somehow answer your question .

Thanks for all that Steve, Danker will be happy as well

Tian-Tian seems to be a bit under-rated. She can have a good career with a solid game like hers, she seems to have a game style similar to Eun-Ha Kim.

I would have liked to see Nan-Nan go futher, maybe next time.

I think i want Tian-Tian to win this because she has rather consistent results and appears to be a hard-worker on court.

I would also prefer to see Tian Tian win .

So far, Jie and Zi have had extremely consistent results, given their rankings (Zi in particular). If you take the defeats of these players since the beginning of the year :

Nan Nan - Tian Tian - Jie - Zi
  • ranking between 151 and 200 : 1 - 0 - 1 - 1
  • ranking between 201 and 250 : 1 - 1 - 1 - 0
  • ranking between 251 and 300 : 2 - 1 - 1 - 5
  • ranking between 301 and 351 : 0 - 2 - 0 - 3
  • ranking between 351 and 400 : 1 - 1 - 3 - 1
  • ranking between 401 and 450 : 2 - 2 - 0 - 0
  • ranking between 451 and 500 : 0 - 0 - 2 - 0
  • ranking beyond 501 : 1 - 1 - 0 - 0
