Maureen Drake def. Bryanne Stewart 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 (at least I think that was the set scores; It was a pretty good match. Maureen started sluggishly, but she dominated from early in the second set. I'm always amazed that Maureen has never achieved more. I know she made the fourth round of the Australian a few years ago and was playing well before getting injured. But her baseline game is strong, and she does a good job of serving, volleying and hitting the touch shots. I'm guessing it's her head that has prevented her from being a consistent top 100 player.
Other singles scores:
Terryn Ashley won the first set 6-4 against Saori Obata and they were at 1-1 in the second when I left. Nathalie Vierin was 2-1 up on Kristin Schukelbir (spelling) when I left.
I talked with Lindsey Lee briefly and she said that Ashley played No. 2 singles at Stanford behind Laura Granville -- either last year or the year before. Ashley plays a big game, but it's very hit or miss. Obata was struggling to hang with her in the points, but Ashley's errors were keeping it close.
Vierin plays a solid baseline game and she looked to have too much variety and staying power for the young Schukelbir. Of course, I only saw three games, so that wasn't much to go on.
I mainly went for the doubles -- to see Julie Pullin-Lorna Woodroffe take apart Allison Bradshaw and Jennifer Embry. Last week, these two teams played a close three-setter in La Canada, but today, Julie and Lorna played very well and won 6-2, 6-3 -- or maybe 3-3. Anyway, it wasn't as close as the score suggested. Lorna is a superb doubles player, as is Julie. I had seen Lorna play singles last year when she was struggling with injuries, but I've never seen her on a doubles court. I'm guessing she could be top 50 as a doubles player if she were to commit to it full time. She has an explosive return game, volleys extremely well and has a wonderful lob from the baseline and mid-court. Ditto for Julie. Hopefully, these British girls will win the title.
If I get the remaining scores, I'll try to post them later.
