British Tour Swansea

No, I know its not actually a challenger, but this still seems the most appropriate place to post it. Here's the commitment list so far (they'll be a lot of late entries, as usual!) for the British tour event at Swansea (qualifiers start tomorrow):

Karen Paterson GB 623
Eva Erbova CZE 631
Kelly Simkin GB 691
Alice Barnes GB 732
Chantal Coombs GB 75
Luisa Cowper GB 1035
Rebecca Rankin GB 1036
Rebecca Llewellyn GB 1122
Helen Broome GB 1146
and the following non-world ranked British players:

K. Shaw, R. Dandeniya, A. McKenzie, A. Martin, M. Neish, H. Adams
S. Cousins, R. Everson-Watts, K. Leonard, R. Porsz, A. White and K. Laidler

The second round draw (where the top 4 seeds come in) is as follows

- Karen Paterson (623) V C.Miles (3.1) OR H. Adams (2.2)
- R. Hood (2.3) OR A. Martin (2.1) V Mhairi Neish (2.1) OR Rebecca Llewellyn (1122)
- Alice Barnes (732) V S. Cousins (2.2) OR Helen Broome (1146)
- Amber Silverstone (2.1) OR K. Shaw (1.5) V Chantal Coombs (750)
- Luisa Cowper (1035) V T. Lock (2.3) OR K. Laidler (2.2)
- Rebecca Dandeniya (1.5) OR Rachel Porsz (2.2) V Kelly Simkin (691)
- Rebecca Rankin (1036) V K. Leonard (2.2) OR Anna White (2.2)
- E. Flint (2.3) OR Alice Mackenzie (2.1) V Eva Erbova (CZE: 631)

Not nearly as many entries for this British tour event as there usually is. It doesn't look like there was a qualifying event. Very unusual for a player rated 3.1 to make the main draw.

I was somewhat surprised to see that Erbova is playing in Swansea.

Does she live in the UK?

So it's Katie Shaw. I wasn't sure (that's why some players only have initials )

At the British Nationals last year, I over-heard Alice Mackenzie's Dad (who might play Erbova) saying to her coach something along the lines of "In all honesty, I'd be glad if Alice gave up tennis, and was just like any other school-girl. It would certainly save me money". Glad to see she hasn't taken his advice, a 2.1 rating is something that shouldn't be wasted

I sometimes see Alice Mckenzie training. She has a good attitude and puts a lot of time and effort into improving her game.

I think she won a regional tournament in Cardiff recently and I hope she'll start to make an impression at a higher level soon.

Yes, that's a similar impression to what I've got of McKenzie when I've seen her. She's from Yorkshire isn't she?

It's possible that her rating may change soon, as I think the new ratings run will be released soon (they're done every six months).

Today's quarter-final results were as follows:

Karen Paterson (SCO) BEAT Mhairi Neish (SCO) 6-4, 7-6 (7-5)
Alice Barnes (ENG) BEAT Chantal Coombs (ENG) 6-4, 6-2
Luisa Cowper (ENG) BEAT Rebecca Dandeniya (ENG) 6-1, 6-3
Eva Erbova (CZE) BEAT Rebecca Rankin (ENG) 6-2, 6-1

So no surprises really, although it looks like Neish put up a really good performance in her match against the more experienced Paterson.

Looks like an interesting quarter-final line-up. Bit far to travel though, so I'll be off to a junior Masters tournament instead.

funny you should say that Myfyr... Hannah Collin won the ladies at my club when she was 11! If any of you think of the top women players at your respective clubs, then that is pretty awesome!

Great to see Alice Barnes doing well... I know she wants to play as much competitive tennis as poss. before Stanford. I just hope she can translate her Tour success (where she has got great results against high-ranked players) into success in challengers.

Now nearly 2 am (ouch) and no news of the semi results on teletext

TBE was right! Not the toughest prediction in the world but you'd have made a few bob!

Alice Barnes defeated Karen Patterson to set up a final with Erbova today.

Good luck Barnesy

Eva Erbova beat Alice Barnes 6-3, 6-2.

I was watching a junior masters tournament today featuring Alice Mackenzie (winning twice) amongst others. The results will be posted in the juniors forum where they belong.
