Belgian sweeps titles at Cortec tennis tourney

From Pioneer Press - Els Callens of Belgium won singles and doubles championships Sunday at the Cortec $50,000 U.S. Tennis Association Women's Tournament at Northwest Athletic Club/98th Street in Bloomington.

Callens defeated Stanislava Hrozenska of Slovakia to win the singles final 7-5, 6-3. Callens, ranked No. 135 in the world, earned $7,700, and Hrozenska, ranked 237th, received $4,200.

Callens and Shinobu Asagoe of Japan, the top-seeded doubles team, defeated the second-seeded team, Rika Hiraki and Nana Miyagai, both of Japan, 7-6, 7-6. The winning team shared $2,800.

The weeklong tournament included players from 23 countries.
