Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

I wonder about the Olympics. Let's all pray that nobody gets Zika or whatever else horrible things could happen to the athletes there :-\

Playing Bastad would be a mistake, but I think the real mistake is skipping Stanford. That's been a good tournament for her, plus she has lots of points she won't be defending.

Seriously though, I forgot how bad this portion of the year was for her last year. I forgot how badly she did in Canada and Cinci. That's at least something she can look to improve on.

As for the USO, I have a feeling she would've done a lot of damage last year if not for running into Vika. Since that can't happen until probably the QFs this year, I hope she can capitalise on her high seeding.

I don't know, as Katja said, it's very hard to play Stanford this year, especially now that she had such a good run in Wimbledon and came home just a couple of days ago, she would have to leave for a very long US trip in a few days already. Summer season is so packed this year and it's not only Angie - the Stanford EL looks really weak this year compared to other seasons. The break between Wimbledon and Stanford is just too short, although that tournament and its surface is great for her. It's also completely isolated at the West Coast with all the other US events being at the East Coast.

Not a big fan of playing Bastad either, especially because it's on a different surface, but at least it's not such a big trip for her and she does not have to take it too seriously and gets also a very nice appearance fee. :D

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

Playing Bastad is the actual mistake, leaving the preparation from HC to clay again
Stanford is a tourn that once gave her so much confidence and practice against better players.
What is the real reason, does she want to walk on Serena's tracks ???

Stanford this year would just be a very bad idea. There are too many tournaments this summer. IMO she should have taken a two weeks break between Wimbledon and Montreal.

And of course it's all about the money concerning Bastad :D

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

if it weren't for Rio, could've easily seen her going to Stanford. :sobbing: also, would've probably been "easy" to defend given the EL

btw, is she playing mixed in Rio?

Omg, Angie on a mixed doubles court :nerd: her serve and puff balls will get DESTROYED by the guys :SNE: Plus, her net game is one of the worst in the top 20. Ouch

At least she'll be able to mess with their timing and pass them at the net...maybe

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

i'm interested to see what outfit she'll be wearing for USO series ...Simona's still in her wimbly outfit atm. i really liked her in this outfit last year around this time, and IMO didn't wear it long enough:

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

Agreed. This outfit was super sexy. She looked hot af 0:) the colours really stood out well on her tanned skin and blonde hair. :SNE:

Angie has really upgraded her style game lately. Seems like losing weight has improved every aspect of her life. Her new hair is hot too. Now she's just gotta be more brave with her off-court fashion choices too :x

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

i was curious to see when was the last time Angie played mixed and i found this:

Angelique Kerber - Tennis Explorer

correct me if i'm wrong, but looks like she's only played 3 mixed doubles matches ever (1-2 overall), and 2 of them were in 2012 Olympics with Philip Petzschner (Vika took her out too in MD, dang it). Had not heard of him, but interesting to see that he reached a career high ranking of no. 35 in 2009. he's representing team germany again this year, right?

btw, wow:

^ well, her hair is certainly shorter, but it looks the same to me. :D tbh, i only see that she combs her ponytail higher than previously IMO

ofcourse, wearing her hair unbraided is definitely different. :D have you seen Yulia's braid??

offseason :oh:

Yeah, she cut it and she also got it layered! It used to all be the same length, but now it's shorter around her face. She also got highlights or something because her hair is much more blonde than before  I noticed it at the AO

Yulia's braid is...interesting. For a girl so short, I feel like it's half of her height :SNE: It's funny how so many of the Eastern European girls have that style (Angie, Vika, Caroline, Yulia, Petra, Lucie sometimes). It's like they all drew inspiration from Mary Pierce or something

EDIT: More likely Anna Kournikova than Mary Pierce, if anyone

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

i saw in GM that it's possible that Angie could make the tennis hall of fame. i had never considered this, and never dreamed of this with Angie (surely she doesn't as well afaik). would she be the second german female player inducted if she continues playing well?

also noticed this Hildegard "Hilde" Krahwinkel Sperling does anyone still talk about or mention her in Germany or elsewhere? :D

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

I'd prefer Angie not playing Mixed in Rio tbh. Even Doubles with Petko is questionable IMO. I don't think that they are contenders for a medal and they must play a Singles match almost every day! Angie shoud focus on Singles and relax between her matches  Olympics are very special though, so Angie will probably play every competition that is possible

Btw, they use slow/medium paced hard courts in Rio, too

Great! So Angie is gonna win it like in Australia! :D

I also have very high hopes for USO. I announced its a year of SlamBear a long time ago and we are right on schedule! RG was expected pitstop/slowdown in preparation for more important Slams.

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

Angie getting papped.
Why is she alone? Venice is such a romantic city and her BFF just got married. :SNE: Looking good regardless.

Rewatched a bit of her AO post-final presser and Angie was absolutely glowing. Her banter with everyone (Pennetta?) was hilarious and so self-deprecating when Courtney asked her about those drop shots on huge points towards the end of the match. She seems like such a sweet gal and gets along with everyone on tour, including the press. Angie was probably too nice, in terms of allowing them (and other PR stuff) to encroach on her time the past few months so it's good she's become comfortable setting boundaries and saying no to things.

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

^ you could seriously ask the question if that's really her. ;)
Haha, I'd fly to Venice in a minute, if I could. But not for Angie :grin2:

ETA: Apparently Bild reported this was Angie (it's in the "live feed" towards the bottom of the page) and some details on what she was up to (shocked they didn't say what type of facial she had, lol).

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

btw, whatever happened to Simon Iden?
I also wondered where he is. In Wimbledon, she was working together with Cathrin Junker. I can only imagine that they did not have a long-term agreement. I know that Iden is also working for German youth soccer teams for example, so maybe he has some other duties as well.

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

I know this is really low and gossipy, but I'm curious - do we know anything about Angie's love life? I'm kind of surprised an athlete of her profile manages to keep that aspect of her life so private.

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

Well I guess if she was gonna withdraw she would've done it by now...just how much money do they always hand out in Bastad that she considers this worth it? Did she get the Serena money they don't need this year or what? :hysteric:

Seems Angie is still learning how to schedule like a top player. At least she pulled out of one of her clay warmups, so that shows progress :SNE:

On the other hand, maybe she really just wants to vulture right now so she can get closer to Serena's points at #1?

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

Angie would play Stanford, if she wants to get points only. Surface is much better for her and field is not even much stronger there  It's all about $$$ (and maybe not flying to the US West Coast before Rio) I would like to know how much they pay her in Bastad and how much they paid Serena last year though :oh:

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

So Azarenka is pregnant. That's some good news for Angie. :rolls:
I wouldn't say it in GM as the others would have eaten my alive much like they did with some Aga fans. :sobbing:

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

^ they play the best matches tho. :worship:

vika's ranking would likely fall again, and when/if she comes back, angie would be in danger of facing her in an early round again. :hysteric:
Yeah, I was looking forward to a potential rematch at the US Open this year. Congrats and best wishes to Vika, though.

Don't think the WTA expected a changing of the guard quite this quickly (or in this fashion). :SNE:

Re: Angie's 2016 - July to September - Olympics & the US Open Series

i'm not an expert on ranking points, but won't she lose points regardless of what happens this week in bastad, for not defending Stanford? :D
Yes. Even if she wins Bastad (very unlikely), Angie loses 190 points for sure! If she doesn't reach the SF (very likely), she loses 370 points. Birmingham (100 points) replaces Stanford (470 points from last year) in her ranking in this case.
Not a big deal though. Not much to defend after that in Montreal, Cincy and NY :)
