Maureen Connolly dominated women's tennis by winning the Grand Slam (all 4 majors in one year)- she is the second person to win it (Don Budge won it in 1938) and the first woman. Overall "Little Mo" has a 61-2 record for the year, winning 12 of 14 events. Her only setbacks are to Doris Hart in Italy and Shirley Fry at the Pacific Southwest.

Doris Hart won at least 13 titles (possibly 14 if she won Sao Paulo in late December). Hart had an 11-2 record vs. #3 Shirley Fry, who won only 3 events, mostly because she was always up against her best friend and doubles partner Hart in the finals. #4 Dottie Knode captured 11 championships, including the German, Dutch, and Yugoslav nation titles.

Two non-Americans had marked success in 53. Thelma Long was on an extended world tour; rare for an Aussie woman at this time. She bagged 12 singles trophies, usually in minor events. British lass Angela Mortimer had at least 6 wins, including the Scandinavian Indoors, Irish, Maidstone, and British Indoors.

Loiuse Brough won 2 events-her old doubles partner Margaret Dupont won the Middle States. Their head to head for 1953 was 2-1 in favor of Brough.

Re: 1953

Comings and Goings

RITA ANDERSON

Britsh player, married on May 19 to Jaroslav Drobny, a top ten Czech tennis player in exile.

BABY BOOM (births)

NANCY CHAFFEE/KAY STAMMERS - cootchy cootchy coo!

Nancy, now Mrs Ralph Kiner has a baby boy. Ralph Michael is born at Mercy Hospital in Chicago and weighs 7 pounds 4 ounces. Kay Stammers, Mrs Menzies also gives birth to a baby boy as does Trudi Terwindt Blaisse while Nel Van Der Storm Hermsen, Lorna Cornell Cawthorn and Joopy Roos give birth to baby girls.

ANN HAYDON

Ann Haydon’s Tennis career hasn’t kicked off yet but her Table Tennis is in full flight. She reaches the Quarter Finals of the English Open where she loses to Ros Rowe

DORA KILIAN

It seems Dora has a great liking for the English Food and has been eating too much Spotted Dick - During her stay she gains 12lbs in 2 months – carry on like this Dora and you’ll end up a Roly Poly!

HELEN PEREZ

Helen does remarkably well in her comeback season as she suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis.

BETTY ROSENQUEST PRATT

Betty has heat stroke during the US V Jamaica Davis Cup tie and is unable to watch the last 2 days. Despite suffering Betty still manages to enjoy a drink or two with Bob Perry and Tut Bartzen. With her sister Em she drives from New Jersey to Los Alamos where Em is working before flying on to spend 10
days with her parents.

BARBARA SCOFIELD DAVIDSON - It’s Gordon’s fault!

Barbara blames her husband for being at 0-40 with her tennis. Too many champagne parties, touring Europe in Gordon’s new Renault and excessive Flamenco Dancing with her buddy Dottie Head Knode were early signs that Barabara was going off the rails. She started losing to players who had never beaten her before but only when she could fit the matches in – after all there was the retail therapy in the Bois du Boulogne and the sightseeing to do in Istanbul. Things are looking serious when she loses a 5-0 lead in the final set to Thelma Long in the US Indoors – Gordon almost collapses in shock and it takes 30 minutes of complete rest before he recovers – Barbara is feeling desperate…..fortunately the calm Swiss air and the cowbells bring Barbara to her senses and she triumphs in Lugano – you can relax now Gordon!

Thelma Coyne Long won the first game of the first set of the final with Shirley Fry. But Fry won the next 6 games to take the set. She hit 13 winners in that set many on powerful cross-court forehand drives. The second set was deadlocked at 3-3 when Fry started pounding her drives into the corners allowing her to win the last 3 games of the match. Fry hit 10 more winners in the second set giving her 23 for the match to only 9 for Coyne Long.

Thelma is missing her native Aussie title-opting for a world tour.

Draw Notes:

Fay Occleshaw=I Occleshaw. Also possibly=Olive Occleshaw
Miss J Warnock=Judy Warnock. Note that the Aussie site lists her as Joan Warnock.

The official Australian website has the seeding wrong due to the presence of foreign seeds. For example, it lists Mary Hawton as the #4 seed rather than her true seed of domestic #2.

Geoff Harvey=G.C. Harvey

Missing full names for:

Mrs R. Wratten

-----------------------------------------------
Summary:

Playing the first leg of her attempt for the grand slam, Maureen Connolly easily won the 1953 Australian Championships. She defeated Carmen Borelli (later the wife of LTAA President Brian Tobin) 6-0 6-1 the first round, Mrs. Baker 6-1 6-0 in the second, thrashed promising Pam Southcombe 6-0 6-1 in the quarters and the accomplished Mary Hawton fared little better in the semis 6-2 6-1. Connolly's doubles partner, American Julie Sampson came through the other half of the draw to face Little Mo. The final, however was no more of a contest than Connolly's other matches. If Sampson advanced to the net she was passed, if she stayed at the baseline she run from side to side until she was so hopelessly out of position that the point was lost. Sampson was actually the reigning US junior champion which made her the same age as Connolly but you would never have thought so, to see Connolly blast her from the court 6-3 6-2. 6,532 fans came out for the final. The American "amazed the crowd of 6,532 with the depth of her accurate drive and passing shots." In winning Mo becomes the youngest ever to take the title. The temperature was over 100 on finals day.

Defending Aussie titleholder Thelma Long is playing on clay in Florida (USA) during the championships!

Singles Note:
.....After losing the first 3 games of the first set of the final, Dorothy Bundy Cheney won 6 consecutive games to take that set. Bundy Cheney was ahead throughout the second set until the late stages. She failed to convert either of her 2 match points in that set. She missed an easy volley on one of those points. Despite badly blistered feet, Bundy Cheney won 3 consecutive games in the third set to take a 4-3 lead. But she did not win another game.

From Lawn Tennis and Badminton, 15 May 1953:

The semi-finals

Visions of an all-English final in the women's singles faded after Miss Helen Fletcher and Miss Angela Mortimer had won their opening sets against their top-seeded American opponents. Both Miss Doris Hart and Miss Shirley Fry raised their games when challenged so resolutely and gained the final in deciding sets. In the wind-laden centre court Miss Mortimer pursued an all-court game to take the opening set from Miss Hart at 6-3, selecting her net raids with discretion behind her forcing drive. The holder then tightened up and altered the complexion of the match by winning nine games out of ten to move to a 3-0 lead in the third set. The wind played havoc with Miss Mortimer's frailer strokes, but she fought back with great determination in climbing back from 1-4 to 3-4, only to lose her service with a double fault. She took Miss Hart's service for 4-5, but lost her own from 40-15 and was beaten at 6-4.

Miss Fletcher had the advantage of playing on the more sheltered clubhouse court and she produced her Surbiton form of two years ago as she hit gaily all round the court and took the first set. From 0-4 in the second she came within a point of 5-all. Her game had more enterprise than that of the American visitor, and it seemed she had only to maintain such a purposeful game to bring off a big win. A double fault at game point was her undoing, and she lost the second set at 4-6. Miss Fry's solid driving earned her a 2-0 lead in the third set as she put on the pressure, and she moved serenely to 3-1, 4-2 and 5-2, winning at 6-3.
--

Miss Hart's third victory

Miss Hart scored her third successive victory in the championship against Miss Fry in the final. As an exhibition of world-class play, the match was much enjoyed by a large morning crowd, and though both made mistakes in a gusty wind, they scorned any thoughts of defensive play. The issue was for long in the balance, as had been usual in their series of contests in many parts of the world – believed to be in the neighbourhood of 150 matches – but Miss Hart knew how to win the key points of the third set. Her fluency of shot and pressure off the ground and at the net gave her a slight advantage over Miss Fry's industry from the back court. Eight service games out of ten were lost in the third set, and Miss Fry nearly got on terms at 5-all after being 2-5 down.

Fry and Hart fly from Rome to England-playing their first round matches only an hour after landing. Hart wins her 4th consecutive European title. Connolly and Sampson are playing exhibitions in Milan and Zurich this week.
Singles Note:
.....In the final, Shirley Fry squandered a 4-1 lead in the first set, finally losing it to Doris Hart 13-11. Fry appeared too tired to put up much of a fight in the second set.

Draw Notes:

All draws directly from the Dunlop annual and in exact draw order.
Seedings for singles come directly from RG. The #4 seeding of Baba Lewis is bizarre to say the least. As it was she defaulted.
Doubles seeds #3 and #4 could be inverted.

Some names and scores are missing, probably because the French didn't bother to record them. Even one woman's name is missing in the doubles draw (Carlisle's partner. Luckily the NYT identifies her as Alice Wavre) and Herr defaulted with one partner (Coessons) and ended up playing with Fageros!

The NYT makes clear that Henri (and not Pierre) was Amouretti's partner in the mixed.

Recent Name Changes

Bourdet=married name of Adamoff-star of the 1930s.
Chatrier=married name of Partridge, wed to French player Philippe Chartrier.
Drobny=former Rita Anderson, now wed to Jaroslav Drobny.
Haillet=married name of Annie Posset, wed to fellow player Robert Haillet.
Knode=married name of Head.
Francoise Lemal=Mlle F Lemal.
Rigolette=the Mrs Alvensleben of the French draw. She was not yet wed at this time.
Rinkel=married name of Quertier, wed to Dutch player Ivo Rinkel, but keeping British citizenship.
Wavre=married name of Charbonnier. Despite the French site listing she was married at this time (per Dunlop)

Missing male name:

R. Delarue

Summary:

At age 18, Maureen "Mo" Connolly becomes the youngest ever to win all 4 majors. She's also the yongest lady champ at Roland Garros. Having won the Australain, this is the second leg of her attempt at the "Grand Slam", and only Doris Hart stood in her way. Doris upset Mo at Rome right before Paris in what turned out to be Connolly's only defeat of 1953. Mo's sizzling shots barely cleared the net, running Doris ragged in set one. The second was close until 4-4, when Mo got the vital break.

Earlier in the event favorites had quarterfinal struggles. Nelly Landry, the 1948 French winner, took the middle set off #3 seed Shirley Fry, "but half killed herself doing so and was nowhere in the third." (Racquet, p 36). Maureen was pushed by Mme Sue Chatrier. "As the British Miss Partridge she gave Miss Connolly a rough passage at last Wimbledon. She did so again by the same tactics, slow balling down the middle of the court. It was effective up to a point. The champion was uncertain and hesitant. Yet Mrs Chatrier so exhausted herself by the tactics that when American pressure was subsequently plied she had no answer whatsoever." (Racquet. p 36).
