Summary (courtesy of AndrewTas)

Wills got better winning the French, Wimbledon and US Championships again without losing a set and in more commanding fashion. Phoebe Holcroft Watson is a finalist at the US Championships defeating Jacobs in the semi-finals (she also defeated Jacobs in the Wightman Cup the week before), while Jacobs was a finalist at Wimbledon. Von Reznicek emerged during the year as a contender winning the German Championships.

Daphne Akhurst wins her fourth Australian title but doesnt tour Europe. The USA defeats Great Britain 4-3 at Forest Hills therefore going ahead in the series 4-3 (since 1923). Also Simone Mathieu (nee Passamard) reaches her first French final (she won play 7 more, winning 2).

November 29-December 10, Victorian Championships, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (Grass)
Venue: The Association Courts, Kooyong

From ‘The Age,’ Saturday, November 30, 1929:

The first day of the 46th annual Victorian Championships, and the concurrent interstate matches, was favoured yesterday at Kooyong with beautiful weather, and a much better attendance than on the opening day last year. […] The courts played very truly, looked really excellent, and came in for none of the criticism which they received last year, and quite justly. They were a trifle slower than the visitors are accustomed to use, but that is only natural, seeing how much rain has fallen on them recently. But they are a big improvement on what Kooyong has produced in past years.

Interstate matches

Friday, November 29

Victoria led New South Wales 4-2

Sylvia Harper d. Louie Bickerton (NSW) 6-3 6-2
Meryl O’Hara Wood d. Marjorie Cox (NSW) 6-2 6-3
Gladys Toyne d. Dorothy Dingle (NSW) 6-1 6-4
Ula Valkenburg (NSW) d. Ruth Stephens 6-2 6-2

Dingle/Valkenburg d. Harper/Wood 6-0 6-0

Second day of interstate matches

Saturday, November 30

Victoria vs South Australia

Frances Hoddle-Wrigley d. Kathleen Le Messurier (SA) 4-6 6-4 10-8
Youtha Anthony d. Dorothy Weston (SA) 7-5 3-6 6-1
Joan Pett d. Gwen Griffiths (SA) 7-5 6-2
Kathleen Murdoch d. Sydney Hocking (SA) 6-8 6-2 6-4
Le Messurier/Weston d. Murdoch/Pett 3-6 6-4 6-1
Anthony/Hoddle-Wrigley d. Griffiths/Hocking6-1 6-3

Notes: Meryl O’Hara Wood came into the net frequently and outclassed her opponent, Marjorie Cox, with crisp volleys and severe smashes. Dorothy Weston found that on the Melbourne courts the ball comes faster and the slow ball slower than is the case in Adelaide. Kathleen Le Messurier appeared to have her match against Frances Hoddle-Wrigley in hand in the third set, but one or two drives just missed the line.

Meryl and her husband, Pat, also defaulted their quarter-final match to Marjorie Cox and Jim Willard in the mixed doubles event. Due to his bruising a thigh, Willard and Cox had to default the mixed doubles final to Ruth Stephens and Harry Hopman.

You have added here these results that must go in 1964 thread, where you are now working.
Thanks for the heads up Jimbo!

No worries David-I can't count how many times I have done this. I won't touch your edits for a while if that makes it easier to add them into 1964.

In about a week I can erase these if you like as there are many additions from Newmark to add and it will be a good chance for me to do a full edit, check slams, etc.

Need to finish off edits to page 44. Then general edits much needed!

Added the photo below.

John Lavery painted his stepdaugher at Cannes. Titled "Tennis Under the Orange Trees at Cannes, 1929", it shows Alice Trudeau serving. She was coached for a time by George Lytteton Rogers.
