Summary:

Wills tours Europe for the first time and plays Wightman Cup and Wimbledon but loses to Kitty McKane at both events. England defeated the USA 6-1 in the Wightman Cup which was played at Wimbledon. Kitty McKane wins Wimbledon over Jessup in the QF and then recieves a walkover (due to weakness from jaundice) from Lenglen in semi-finals. In the final she just defeats Wills 4-6 6-4 6-4. Wills would rebound and with the absence of Lenglen she wins the Paris Olympic Games over Vlasto and then returns to the USA to win the USA Championships, over Mallory in the final. Also Sylvia Lance wins her first, and only Australian Championships. Even though she didnt win any tournament of note (in fact she won only 4 tournaments) Lenglen was still ranked No 1. by Myers.

Lenglen's year ends in disaster after a stunning quarterfinal tussle with doubles partner Elizabeth Ryan. Ryan pushed Suzanne to the brink of defeat in 3 tight sets. Both women walk off the court to rapturous applause. The next day Lenglen withdraws from Wimbledon. Her foes say she fears losing, while others cite a case of jaundice she contracted in Spain. In either case the event casts a shadow on her dominance similar to the events of 1921.

Despite not winning a major Lenglen's record is sterling. In singles she won 4 of 6 events.compling a
23-0 match record, with 2 defaults. She also wins 9 doubles titles (7 with Ryan) and 9 mixed titles.

Elizabeth Ryan wins 24 events in singles.

Satterthwaithe defaults in the singles to save energy for the mixed doubles. The strategy almost pays off, as she and Jack Hillyard are only point away from claiming the opening set vs Lenglen/Aeschliman, who eke it out 10-8 and eventually win going away in the 3rd.

Draw Notes:

Rain on the last few days delayed the event-it concluded on Wednesday, January 30.

The first year seeding was used.

Meryl O'Hara Wood was the #7 seed in singles but not in draw. Did she default before the event started? Note the default of #5 seed Addison, presumably after the draw was already made.

Jean Ferguson plays for the Brighton Club
Nancy Grant (and not Mrs M. Grant) was Hester Phillimor's partner in doubles.
Adela Gwendoline Hack went by "Gwen"
Mrs Dorothy Agnes Hope is the sister of Richard (Bob) Schlesinger. She wed Rodney Hope on 18 August 1921 in South Yarra.
Vera Howett listed as Miss V.M. Howett.
Betty Morton=Miss I. Morton.
Mrs JS Simpson= nee Miss Jessie Graham Keltie of Tasmania.
Nell Thyne listed as HM Thyne
Mrs J Todd= nee Marjorie Mountain, Md to a Mr J Todd in November 1923.

Missing full names for:

Mrs Bodington
Miss M. Farnsworth, who partners with Miss Morton regularly, was until recently a member of the Grace Park Club.
Mrs G. B. Goodes. Another variant is Mrs Goode. She is also called Miss Goodes in a couple of sources.

-------------------------------------------------

Summary:

Molesworth was the favorite again this year but fell in the quarters to Kath Le Messurier 9-7 3-6 6-8. This match was different to the usual women's matches of this time as both women drove fiercely from beginning to end. Le Mesurier who had improved greatly over the last 12 months led in every set. Molesworth pegged her back from 3-5 to win the first. Le Messurier's off-backhand caused problems for Molesworth, jamming her on the backhand side, to give her the second set and two match points at 5-2 in the 3rd. Molesworth hit her away back to 5-5 but Le Messurier steadied to win 8-6.

A young 20 y/o Daphne Akhurst won her quarterfinal with one reporter getting quite carried away:
"Miss Akhurst an artist to her fingertips, belied her delicate Victorian that suggested she had slipped out of one of Jane Austen's novels by sifting cayenne pepper shots from a never-failing supply.

Sylvia Lance recovered from a bad start to beat the Victorian Mrs. Todd 16 64 61 and Boyd beat Simpson to complete the semi lineups. Boyd carried this form to beat Akhurst by pinning the Sydney youngster against the backnetting with the depth and power of her forehand, the most feared shot in Australian women's tennis. Lance defeated Le Mesurier 6-2 6-2 by adapting her to the soft court by slicing and chopping, in which the lack of pace told against le Mesurier who handled Molesworth's power the round before."

Lance looked to be in full control against Boyd when she led 6-3 3-0 and 40-15, but Boyd struggled back to duece and then after 6 more dueces took the game and the next 5 to win the set. This effort took its toll and Lance gained a slight advantage at the start of the 3rd and held on to 6-4.

It was a tense and interesting contest, but the same reporter who found Akhurst such a delight was not that impressed:
"As a spectacle the match fell short of realising the requirements of championshipof the tonic quality which, reinforced by vigour, carries the hallmark of high distinction. Both were over-cautious and bent on making a success of the engagement in an entirely unbrilliant way. There was some evidence of the artistic quality that appeals to the doctrinaire or dilettante but too much harmless hitting of the mercerised near silk quality to provide the exciting interest associated with an inspiriting contest."

We have this great summary thanks to Louloubelle

..and From AustinRunner comes interesting instructions from the organizers of the 1924 Australasian Championships:

"The first Australasian championship meeting to be held under the new conditions in Melbourne from January 19 to January 28* will comprise seven events only - the singles, doubles, and mixed, women's singles and doubles, and junior (boys) singles and doubles; each event carrying with it for 12 months the title of championship of Australasia. The principle conditions are as follows:-
(1) Entries must be made on the prescribed form; and when entrance fees are payable they must accompany all entries. Any holder of a championship of the previous year, if wishing to compete, must enter and play through.
(2) No entry will be accepted from any player residing in Australia unless such player be a member of a club affiliated to a State Association or a member of such association.
(3) The committee reserves the right to refuse the entry of any player, or to determine if such player is not eligible to enter, or has not the necessary ability to compete, and shall not be required to give a reason.
(4) In all events the draw will be seeded by the committee in accordance with the rules.
(5) Play shall be continuous from the first service till the match be concluded, provided that after the third set - or when women take part, the second set - either player is entitled to a rest which shall not exceed 10 minutes.
(6) Entries for all events will close at 5 p.m. on Saturday evening January 5 with the secretary of the L.T.A.V., Mr. J. F. Koch, at the club house, Glenferrie Road, Kooyong.

There appears to exist in the mind of many players doubt as to who is eligible to enter. Owing to its being a championship meeting pure and simple, it is certainly not intended to accept entries from anyone who may come along; otherwise the events, or the preliminary rounds in them, would become a farce. It is intended to receive entries from all A grade players of both sexes, and possibly from the best of the B grade, and from any promising juniors, the committee finally determining who are eligible. Should any entries be refused on account of the players not being considered of sufficient standard to compete, the entrance fees will be refunded."

A brand new event on the Riviera calendar. The slow red clay here was imported from Paris. Fine weather brings out big crowds daily.

Drama occurs in the mixed final. The 15-13 score is the longest set score ever in Lenglen's career.

From "Lawn Tennis and Badminton", February 2, 1924: "The final between Mlle Lenglen and Col. Mayes versus Miss Ryan and Aeschlimann must be one of the longest games on record - the third set running into 28 games before it was finally decided in Mlle Lenglen's and Mayes's favour. The critical point was the sixth game in the third set, when Miss Ryan and Aeschlimann led 3-2 and 40-15 on Aeschlimann's [Mayes's] service. They lost instead of winning that game, and that was the turning point. They again led 4-3, but never afterwards got the lead.

"Miss Ryan played superbly, especially in the second set. Mlle Lenglen played her best game at times, but was uncertain at others. That Miss Ryan was the best of the four I think was the opinion of most of the spectators. It was certainly mine. Aeschlimann was a bundle of nerves. Had he played within 15 of his proper form he and his partner must have won. It was an intensely exciting game and at times we saw some great tennis."

In singles Dorothy Shepherd-Barron led American Leslie Cadle 8-7 40-love in a deciding set. Dorothy couldn't convert on 3 match points, losing 14-12.

Eve the ladies doubles has drama. When a linesman calls her for a foot-fault the Divine One refuses to play on until the English linesman is replaced. Suzanne ran to her mother in tears. The umpire refused her demand that the umpire be removed. "It is unfair. The English are pigs", she declared. [The umpire must have been British]. The diva hurled abuse at the linesman, but he was deaf or uncomprehending. Lenglen agreed to go on only after the tournament referee asked the linesman to voluntarily leave the court. Lenglen said afterwards that the custom in France is to give a warning first.

Losing finalists Covell and Shepherd-Barron are great friends, so much that they were both married together in Bombay during a double wedding ceremony.

With a small entry and many top players missing this was a minor interlude on the Riviera circuit this year. Sunshine and lack of wind made for a pleasant event. Phyllis Satterwaithe wins here for the 3rd year in a row, giving her permanent possession of the Cup. In the semis she exploited Leslie Cadle's weak backhand.

26 players had a bye in the first round. This fixes the number for the singles draw at exactly 39.

FI: Hollins d. Mary K Browne 7-5 6-4
This is a funny one. Hollins is Marion Hollins, a top-flight golfer of the era. Browne, of course, was competitive in both sports. The Pebble Beach event was a golf tournament, and on the 19th, Hollins beat Browne in the final "by a margin of 5 and 4." There were a number of combined golf and tennis events in this time period, but there's no evidence that this is one of them, and it appears someone interpreted the margin of the golf final as a tennis score.

* A pseudonym.

Week wreaked havoc on the schedule. Sunday was completely rained out, and also held up play on Monday. The latter stages of the mixed doubles were finished at the Nice event the following week. A 45 game semifinal win over Ermyntrude Harvey left Satterthwaithe tired and at the mercy of Elizabeth Ryan in the final.

Little indicates that Chambers (Playing as "Mrs James") and Satterwaithe were exhausted from their semi win.

Crowds are disappointed to see so little of Lenglen, as she entered only doubles with Ryan and mixed with Brookes. Brookes had to default with flu, and Leglen/Ryan won the doubles semi and final by walkovers!

It was up to Lili de Alvarez to woo fans with her high risk play and elan. In the final she made an impression on Elizabeth Ryan. The Spaniard proved unable to deal with Ryan's clever drop shots.

Mme Florand is listed as Mme Florent by Tennis et Golf. There are numerous other examples of a Mme Florand, who always partnered S Lecaron in major events, as she did here. Thus" Mme Florent" is Mme Florand.

Mme Germaine Pigueron was the sister of Yvonne Bourgeois.

French Open

---------------------------------------

Summary:

Lenglen was ill much of 1924 and opted not to defend her national title. This opened the door for Diddie Vlasto, ranked #2 in France, to come through. Her toughest match was against Mme Golding, who had been runner-up to Lenglen the last 3 years. Once Diddie got past Golding at 6-4 2-6 6-3 the final was a straight set affair.

The ladies final was held on the 15th.

One year earlier Lenglen had won the women's doubles title with Diddie Vlasto and the mixed doubles title with Jacques Brugnon.

1924 was the very last French Closed National Championships. As a price for joining the International Tennis Federation the United States demanded the ITF discontinue the grandly titled "World Championship" events on Covered Courts (Indoors), Hard Courts (Clay), and Grass.

In practice the Hard Court Championships were held every year in France with the exception of 1922, which was in French speaking Belgium. In essence then it was a French event, and naturally they wanted to keep it that way. As luck would have it the 1924 Olympics were in Paris. As a grand event it filled in nicely for the World Hard Court Championships as a bridge between it and a newly born French International Championships in 1925. This is the modern day "French Open."

Clearly the French Open was really the child of the International World Hard Court event and not the French Nationals. So why does the official list of winners go back to the 1890s and include the French Nationals? Tradition would be first-since it started much earlier (1891) as opposed to the more recent World Championships, which only began in 1912.

French Nationalism may have also played a role. The 1922 event had been in Belgium. Besides, the World Hard Court event didn't carry the word or notion of "French" in the title!
