It appears that at least the women’s singles event at the Irish Championships in 1880 was held at the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club in Wilton Place, Dublin, and not in Fitzwilliam Square. A member’s voucher was required for entrance to the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club to see the women’s matches which were probably played on asphalt courts. At the time many felt the more "private" locale was more appropriate for ladies than a public square. Thankfully this attitude did not prevail in later years.

-----

circa June 14-22, Kemptown, East Sussex, England (Grass)

FI: Miss Adshead d. Eva Adshead 6-1 4-6 3-6 6-2 6-3

This was a best-of-five-sets final.

-----

????, South of Ireland Championships, Limerick, Ireland (Grass)
Venue: Limerick Lawn Tennis Club

FI: Miss Smith d. ????

History - Limerick Lawn Tennis Club

In 1881 in the final of Saint-Leonards-On-Sea, Constance Smith d. Marian Smith - could this Miss Smith be one of them? Possible of course, but Smith is a very common name.

-----

August 16-19, Waterford Tournament, Waterford, Ireland (Grass)
Venue: Waterford Cricket Club

SF: May Langrishe d. Miss Connellan 6-3 6-1
SF: D. Meldon-bye

FI: May Langrishe d. D. Meldon 6-5 6-0

-----

September 15, Saint Leonards-on-Sea, Hastings, Sussex, England (Grass)
Venue: Saint Leonards Lawn Tennis Club

SF: Augusta Langley d. Marion Langley 6-3 6-2
SF: Flora Langley d. Mrs Knapp 6-0 6-1

FI: Augusta Langley d. Flora Langley 6-4 6-4

The Langleys were siblings and daughters of Henry Langley, of Portarlington in Ireland, and his wife Harriet, who had been born in Naples, Italy. There were at least seven Langley children, four girls and three boys.

In addition to Flora (b. 1860) and Marion (b. 1866), the other daughters were Augusta (b. 1858) and Constance (b. 1862). Constance was easily the best player of the four. She later married fellow player Charles J. Smith and thereafter was known as “Mrs C.J. Smith”. It was traditional to refer to the eldest sibling as “Miss” and to give only the first initial of younger siblings.

-----

Singles (Draw=8)

1R: Ellen Maltby d. Miss Steele

FI: Ellen Maltby d. Mary Ann Maltby 6-3 6-3

MX: Miss Davidson/William Renshaw d. Miss Weeks/Ravenshill 6-0 6-2

No scores are available for early rounds.

Re: 1880

On 15 September 1880, a one-day tournament for members only was held at the Saint Leonards Lawn Tennis Club in Sussex. Only four players took part, but three of them were sisters. Here are the results:

15 September, Saint Leonards-on-Sea, Hastings, Sussex, England (Grass)

SF: Miss Langley d. Marion Langley 6-3, 6-2
SF: Flora Langley d. Mrs Knapp 6-0, 6-1
--

FI: Miss Langley d. Flora Langley 6-4, 6-4
--

However, it was traditional to refer to the eldest sibling as “Miss” and to give only the first initial of younger siblings, so the winner might well have been Augusta.

Constance was defeated the following year by "holder" Miss Langley in the challenge round. So yeah, most probably Augusta.

In 1881 in the final of Saint-Leonards-On-Sea, Constance Smith d. Marian Smith - could this Miss Smith be one of them?
