Re: irish tennis

Morrissey has a good first round draw, facing an Aussie wc ranked around 240 But if he wins he could face the fifth seed.

MARCAN, Dino (CRO) 5 v SOFAER, David (AUS)
MORRISSEY, John (IRL) v WC SWAYSLAND, Joey (AUS)

Jelena Jankovic | Jelena Dokic | Conny Perrin | Kelly Liggan | Vita Diatchenko | Irini Georgatou
Domachowska | Bacsinszky | Cirstea | Halep | Chala | Baltacha | Antoniychuk | Naydenova

Beth Mattek-Sands Georgie Stoop

Re: irish tennis

That's an unfortunate second round match. But I guess this is the standard John (and Sam) are going to have to get used to

That sucks about Mariyana, but she was pretty unlikely to be accepted to any of those anyway wasn't she? Actually, how do players gain entry to their first senior tournaments without getting wildcards, if they have no ranking points? Do you just sign up for everything and hope that sooner or later there are enough withdrawals to get you in?

Re: irish tennis

I'm not sure how they rank them? All I know is that unranked players who have some ranking points are first. Maybe if you have a ITF juniors ranking you are ranked higher in the list, because Bowtell was further up the ALT list than Levova.

Sad that Morrissey lost

Re: irish tennis

Damn, I went to the Tennis Ireland site and got excited when I saw that pictures from the National Indoors are finally up, but the dicks have absolutely no photos from the women's tournament, only the men's final.

Anyway, here's pics of Mariyana and Lynsey receiving their, erm, "trophies."

Really, Tennis Ireland? You couldn't shell out for anything fancier than Nivea hampers? Lynsey and Mariyana look great though.

Re: irish tennis

I think Lyndsay's is for winning the girls U18 rather than being runner-up in the ladies - but yes, sooo bad that there isn't even a trophy.

Re: irish tennis

Compare this to the Romanian Champs, where the winners get a new house

Jelena Jankovic | Jelena Dokic | Conny Perrin | Kelly Liggan | Vita Diatchenko | Irini Georgatou
Domachowska | Bacsinszky | Cirstea | Halep | Chala | Baltacha | Antoniychuk | Naydenova

Re: irish tennis

And it's not like Romania is even that flush with cash to give to its sports organisations. I suppose it's better in the long term for Tennis Ireland to spend its money on new facilities and plane tickets to send players to tournaments. Also, upon closer inspection, both Lynsey and Mariyana appear to be clutching little envelopes aswell so maybe they got some kind of vouchers. I just hope to God they weren't for Boots.

Anyway, some good news from Australia:

Morrissey (IRL) / Chaudry (GBR) def. (WC) Howe (AUS) / Wagland (AUS) 6-4 6-4

Unfortunately their WC opponents were ranked outside the top 250, but still, a win is a win. They'll have to face the top seeds if they make the third round though.

I know this is the exact prize list:

Quote:
Homes for both men and women winners, cars for the RUs, free airplane tickets to competitions for #3 and computers for #4.
No wonder there is so many up and coming Romanian juniors with these type of prizees

Good win for Morrissey even if it is in doubles, that gives him 5 more pts for his ranking, as he only has won points in 5 doubles tournament. That should put him ahead of Sam Barry in the rankings, by 1 place or two Would also be a new career high for him. They might also win another round
