Frederica had surgery on her shoulder, but is recovering and already entered tournaments in September, so the comeback is near

Neuza still struggles with her knee after months and is doing treatments, but there's still no date to comeback.

By the way Rita Freitas was suspended this weekend for missing an antidoping control in a national tournament in Portugal. She's now suspended for undetermined time. This might be the end of her career.

Shame for Neuza and Frederica. We'll see if they will be able to recover to the ranking they were before, it is not going to be easy. Portuguese female tennis is stuck at this moment, even Michelle is struggling a lot and I have doubts MJK will be able to rise to the occasion.

Neuza just anounced her retirement today

She blamed it on the knee injury, and she's struggling financially.

Wish her all the luck in the future She was always my favourite portuguese player

That's sad but I was more or less expecting it. If she fully recovered, I just didn't see her investing again in the 10 and 25k tournaments, which she always told were not enough financially. She has a lot to be proud, especially her 2nd career, she was top 150 and qualified for Wimbledon, many ITF titles and national titles. Wish her the best for the future!

Re: Portuguese players thread

Was just wondering today where Neuza had been, sad to find that she's indeed retired

I remember her match against Serena at Wimbledon, some beautiful sliced backhands It was nice to see her rise from basically a 10k level player, all the way into the top 150 and competing with some of the best players internationally. She has a lot to be proud of

All the best in the future Neuza

And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. Any if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But he loves you."

Re: Portuguese players thread

Bumping this up after noticing someone asking about Bárbara Luz at the "Disappeared Players" thread in GM.

Question about Portuguese players in general.

Maria João Koehler's last recorded results are early losses in 10Ks almost 2 months ago, after not playing between August 2014 and February 2015.

Bárbara Luz played Fed Cup this year, but hasn't played a pro match since June 2014, her results after briefly trying to play herself up from 10K to 25K level being somewhat mediocre. I've read that she has been in Law school for a couple of years (?) now, so maybe she has given up on pursuing a pro tennis career.

So chances are Micaela Carolina, with her questionable motivation and rather poor results so far in 2015, will be the, if she isn't already, only active Portuguese female pro tennis player.

Is this correct? Any thoughts? Crickets and tumbleweed?

Re: Portuguese players thread

The situation is sad. I didn't get why Koehler lost nearly all of her matches when she was close entering the top100. was/is she injured?
And Luz kind of stopped tennis when she archieved career high of 350 somewhat.

I'm here for the Germans

She was injured and from what I understand she came back too early, still struggling with a knee problem (that was on the news in February). From March, she has been coached by Nuno Marques (again) but that also led her nowhere.
No idea about Luz.
I guess those two have "going international" mentality and will end up fading into oblivion just like all the other portuguese women before them. No news, no nothing.

Michelle is indeed the only active portuguese remaining. Considering her season, active may not be the best word. She has had a mediocre year, if things keep going like this she may be out of the top 200 after wimbledon.

Re: Portuguese players thread

Just heard an interview to Barbara Luz from August, and the reason she left is that she lost her sponsors and had to stop tennis for almost 1 year, her parents also didn't have money to back her up, she said she felt all the pressure from the financial difficulties and had to stop tennis.

But good news, she's going to be back in the tour very soon, with some surprises. Has a new coach, Pedro Cordeiro, former Fed Cup captain, has lost quite some weight and she is married now to football player Diego Medeiros. This week she is back at the National Championships as Barbara Luz Medeiros After that, she's going to work to be back on the ITF tour.

Picture from this week, at the National Champs, she's playing the final against Inês Murta. She really lost some weight!!!
