Clarification of BJK/JC Scandal

I am here in Charlotte watching all the Fed Cup action. It was interesting to see everybody argue on the board about what was going on with JC and BJK when nobody has it right.

Here is what happened:

From Wayne McKewen (AUS) Fed Cup Referee for this Tie

Each tennis federation creates its own rules and regulations regarding practice sessions and acting as a team.

Now this is from BJK:

The USTA decided this year to make all outside practices forbidden because in the past it has caused problems amongst the team. This was done by several players, not by just one.

On Monday, when the team arrived in Charlotte, they had a team meeting and the rules and regulations were discussed. This specific rule was especially stated with an essence because it was a new rule.

According to BJK, Jennifer had been warned a mutliple of times this week because she has had many many practice sessions this week without the team. According to BJK, she had to do what was best for the team, because Monica, Meghann, and Lisa were not allowed this privilege (if you call it that) but Jennifer had done it many times (once again, this is according to BJK with Monica right by her side at the press conference).

When asked if she (BJK) felt as if this was more of a Jennifer influence or a Stefano influence she said a little bit of both. Rumors had been flying all week how he was upset he could not be on the court during the team practice and stuff and that he was causing scenes, but this is not all validated. Take that for what it's worth.

Anyways, BJK was very upset with having to make that decision, but rules are rules, and like Monica said, rules are made for a reason and you shouldn't break them.

Great post! Thanks for uncovering the controversy. Jen shouldnt' get special treatment especially when the other teammates had already agreed to this rule prior. Evidently her father still has a strangled hold that he refuses to let go.

not taking any side at the moment (more information is needed), I was just wondering what kind of problem could it create in the past? and why? why would Lindsay Davenport (when she played for USA) care whether Venus had a practice out side the team? or vice versa?

Thanks for posting this.

There's probably a little more information to come. I wonder if Jen's has a retort to this, because what BJK and Monica says is basically calling Jen a liar because her press statement was a little unclear.

One the one hand it said that Jen was unaware of the rule, yet it also said that she didn't think such a minor rule would have such extreme consequences.

The picture gets a little clearer (though not by much)!

my understanding was the Jennifer and Stefano had approached BJK several times that they wanted to have a private training session for 'extra' training in her spare time.

Bjk wouldn't have a bar of it, saying it was breaching the new rules which Jennifer knew.

Jennifer had completed all team media and training commitments.

Then knowing BJK wasn't going to consent to a private session Capriati went ahead.

I think this rule is ridiculous, players can't stop their training for a whole week with their coach, especially when they have a grand slam to defend in 6 weeks. Capriati did it in her own time. I hope she refuses to play Fed Cup again with BJK (Bloody Joke-of-a-Kaptain)

Can't understand why BJK hasn't asked Jennifer several weeks ago if she is able to have a training with the team regarding the title-defense from RoGa or has to quit the FC on the other hand.

It's a poor account for the US-"Team".

VSFan, thanks for posting this...I knew there had to be more to this story.

It's a difficult and unfortunate situation...

I understand Billie Jean and the USTA trying to keep the team concept together but I also understand Jennifer wanting to continue her regular training pattern in preparation for RG. I believe the rule may be a bit extreme and needs to be modified.

From what I read though, the rule was explained to all participants but Jennifer was looking for special dispensation. If Monica, Meghann, and Lisa all had to abide by the rule it wouldn't have been fair for Billie Jean to grant the extra practice sessions to Jennifer. Apparently the rest of the team supports BJK on this issue so I think the backlash against her is a bit unfair.

The issue seems pretty clear to me. Jen knew what was up but thought the rules didn't apply to her.

<<Evidently her father still has a stranglehold that he refuses to let go.>>

Boy, when I saw them in Charleston I know that was for sure true! Stefano always was and always will be a total ass!
