Canada assured of spot in Fed Cup Playoffs
April 25, 2002

SAN LUIS POTOSI, Mexico (TC) – The Canadian Fed Cup team continues to roll in American Zone Group I action, defeating Mexico 3-0 on Thursday to finish in top spot in its pool and advance to Saturday’s playoff round.

In the first match of the day, Toronto’s Maureen Drake won her third straight match with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Melissa Torres, while Canada’s No.1 player Jana Nejedly of Naples, Fla., guaranteed a Canadian victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Jessica Fernandez. In doubles action, Drake and fellow Torontonian Vanessa Webb ousted Torres and Fernandez, 6-4, 7-5.

“This win feels really good because we were playing against the host country,” said Nejedly, who becomes the all-time leader in Fed Cup singles wins with 14. “Even though we were the better team on paper, we knew it would be tough to be up against Mexico in their own country. I think we were both nervous at first, but we managed to pull it off.”

Canada, who has yet to drop a set all week, finishes first in its pool and will join three other countries in Saturday’s playoff round. With the day off on Friday, the Canadian team awaits results from the Colombia/Brazil match-up to see who it will faces Saturday. The top two teams from the playoff round will advance to a World Group Playoffs July 21-22.
