Re: 2015 "US Open" Hard-court Season
I, for one, attribute this loss to "rust", tho' Petra can go off the rails even if she were fully healthy and played a consistent schedule. She had a 30-day gap since Wimby, same for Timea B., Lucie and Caroline, who all lost their lst rounders to clearly beatable players after 30 days of idleness, save for practice, tho' Caroline played Stanford and lost in the lst. The exception here is that Petra played a far better quality opponent in Vika, tho' I didn't think Vika looked all that sharp. Yet, one could see rust in Petra's game. She was shanking balls, her forehand sailed a lot, her backhand had loops in other moments and her serve did no damage. She had no rhythm for the most part and it showed. Petra has 2 more tourneys prior to the USO to find her timing and rhythm and should be better prior to that event.
I'm not even considering her mono condition, for a poster here claims that Petra had mono retroactive to 5 months earlier from this point. In that time Petra played Madrid, Rome, the French and Wimby. She won Madrid, lost to her nemeses (Suarez and Timea B., respectively, who've owned her this year) in Rome and the French, and capitulated while clearly up in the 2nd after winning the lst set to JJ at Wimby. So, I, for one, am going to give Petra the benefit of the doubt and attribute this bad performance to rust, tho' she still remains inconsistent, irrespective of such overall.
